@kitty I live in LA and I’ve been job searching for about 6 months. Still unemployed. Not sure if it’s just me but it’s been hard

does “ucla” student on an application for a job in the mall add a million points?

^ It sure doesn’t hurt.

someone is telling me who is a san francisco state student that work study hurts your financial aid the following year…

@Philo: Yeah, I found a few apartments in the westwood area like 3 miles from school for like 1400. Don’t know if I want to spend 200 bucks on a parking pass though =/.

@ UCkitty: Oh you’re from norcal? I had no idea. Finding a job in LA shouldn’t be too tough. There’s westwood, beverly center, santa monica and just a bunch of places to work that are around campus.

no idea about that work study thing though.

haha philo has been looking for 6 months…

im guessing females are super vulnerable for boyfriends around ucla so they can move in together and save money…:)

I know it’s not from a UC website, but I’m sure it applies everywhere.

@jason: Thanks for that. Man I don’t know which is a better choice, work study or getting a real job?

Work study you make less but it won’t affect your financial aid next year.

A real job you make more, but after filing taxes your financial aid will probably be less next year.

hmmmmm =/

what if I work for like 3 months during the summer and quit afterwards? will my financial aid go down a lot for next yr? Never thought I’d be reluctant on getting a job now jeez.

UCkitty
cool! well, the good news is…there are a lot more jobs in LA than up here (i am in sausalito). and it is cheaper to live in LA. a little bit. check craigslist for a starter. but you may want to work up here before you move? will you go to UCB is they accept you, did you apply? i will probably attend UCB if they accept me just to save money by not having to move. also, it is pretty crazy driving around LA, and i love it and work down there often, but you might want to visit before you decide to live on your own. i am looking forward to it all. but it takes some time to get used to the traffic and smog. wowowo so glad we have these problems. so many kids were rejected and some with 4.0. that would hurt.

philosoup, you are wise to consider this. just find out what the cap is on earnings, and earn below that. or just work UNDER the table. and yes, keep track and make sure not to give over the limit. it used to be that you could earn 5k per year and pay not tax. but just check into it. 5k would help me a lot.

no berkeley, no igetc

uckitty
wowie zowie
you got into UCLA with no igetc. did you do L & S? good work anyway!

hahah. blessing from God. I am L&S - non traditional pre med

UCLA doesn’t require IGETC though right? because thats why I applied there. I knew no way in heck would I get into berky.

sf state and all state schools suck generally and they do not get Blue and Gold. so that is no gauge for those of us attending a UC. just don’t earn over the earning cap. or work under the table.

and by the way. girls would not be vulnerable to anything. they can just live with other girls. duh.

@ north: Yeah this has always bothered me if I got another job after I transfer. If you lose financial aid from working, than you’ll have to work even more to make up for the money you lose. =/.

@Philo: So yeah we should weigh the pros and cons between work study and a job.

oh, i think UCB has the L and S option too. but i have IGETC so i did not read the specs. if you are premed, maybe you can find an internship. who knows.

iDizzle
i know. it is retardo. and ucla lists the “cost of attendance” about 5k too low, otherwise i could just get extra money in loans. i will earn about 5k from other sources and just barely get by. ironically, it will be Cheaper for me to attend UCLA than my CC.

@ northbeach: Yeah, I’m trying to stay away from loans. But now I’m actually thinking of taking one of the 5k loans just to have emergency money in case I can’t get a job or something. If anything I’ll just give it back if I don’t spend it.

if i have an 180k annuity and a 100k+ court judgment from an ex-employer will that be put into my taxes and weighed on my financial aid next year?
