Does anyone else just wish that WashU would change its name?? When you say "Washington University" most people are like "what? is that in washington? like georgewashington university or university of washington??" orr you can choose to say "washington university in st louis" but the name doesn't quite roll off the tongue. I love WashU but I'd love it even more if it had a shorter and more unique name like Stanford or Yale etc.

Agreed.

123

They should make it Danforth University haha.
Oh well I love it anyway :)

There is, of course, nothing wrong with the actual name. Naming a University after GW is a good thing. There is just no intuitive link to St Louis and there are SO many schools with the words Washington and University in their name:

Central Washington University
Eastern Washington University
George Washington University
Trinity Washington University
University of Mary Washington
University of Washington
Washington and Lee University
Washington State University
Washington University in St Louis
Western Washington University

I think that the school should just call itself "Washington University". The school's reputation and standing has grown so strong that it can and should really stand on the name itself.

Many people at U of P believe that the school should be called "Franklin University" after its founder.

I AGREE!!! Everyone goes "uh?... in Seattle?"
I like Danforth U. (DU??) ;)

How about: W, The University ?

If it is good enough for a hotel and a president, why not a school?

I'd like Danforth University, but it seems like that is not going to happen. Not worth the change, given our current name recognition.

I have seen the trend that mtldad mentioned. People are referring to the school as Washington U or University more.

I don't think it should be called Danforth University. I mean, there's the Danforth campus, Danforth scholars, and the Danforth dorms... it would make those kids living in the Danforth dorms think they're pretty special livin' it up in the "it" dorm. I like the current name, and I completely agree with mtldad. I actually think quite a few people are coming to recognize the univ. even when I simply say "Wash U".

I just want them to take "In St. Louis" off the end of the official name. That should only be used when clarification is necessary.

Why is it called Washington anyway?

There is a statue of George W right outside the library that says it was named in his honor. Also has several of his quotations re knowledge and educatioon.

[quote]
The University's original name at the time of foundation was Eliot Seminary. Eliot, however, was not in favor of the name, and in 1854, the Board of Trustees changed it to Washington Institute in St. Louis in honor of George Washington. In 1857, the name was changed to Washington University. To avoid confusion with over 20 other institutions sharing the Washington name in their titles, the university again changed its name in 1976, restoring the "in St. Louis" suffix to distinguish it in the national media.

Most people just call it "Waitlist U," perhaps they will change it to that.
