Name one thing that people tell you about college that annoys you

If I had a nickel for every time someone asks “Why are you going so far away?”…

^ Yup. I just think: maybe because I want to go to a decent university. One that’s not on the news every few weeks for some crazy new statistic about the school’s academics/student body or some violent crime. Maybe because I have more ambition then just following the heard of all my ridiculous former high school classmates. Or maybe, most importantly, I just love the school and my program! Honestly, people act like I haven’t spent months- years- thinking this over!

I get a lot of people who ask why I am going all the way to California. “Oh, do yo uhave family out there?” Because it is clearly blasphemous to move somewhere where I’ve never been and I have no family.

When people start rattling about ‘experience’ at college, that is when I turn off and start looking for ways to ridicule them.

Everything AtomicCafe said

I dislike it whenever someone starts talking about the “college experience” or when people elevate college as being the time where you’re supposed to be having the time of your life.

I know these quotes are supposed to inspire or excite, and it’s not that college isn’t a good experience, but it’s such a counterproductive thing to say. It turns into peer pressure and, for those who aren’t “living it up,” for whatever reasons, it makes them feel as if something is wrong with them. People shouldn’t be forced into certain lifestyles.

^WHAT?!! Didn’t you know that there is a very specific list of experiences that everyone has to have and things that everyone has to do before they die in order for their lives to have any meaning whatsoever?!

Definitely don’t think I’d get along with AtomicCafe and anyone who posted in agreement…

I get this + “Why is your mother letting you go to school so far away?”

And I’m just like…“Letting me?” I’m 18. She doesn’t have to “let” me go. I bought my own plane ticket. I’m the one in charge of tuition.

I love my mom, but the question grates.

And- “But it’s so cold there!”

Anywhere that isn’t in the pit of hellfire known as AZ is going to be cold.

^^ hahaa i feel the same way xSteven. you guys make college seem so overrated :(

I agree with AtomicCafe.

This is in particular about my college:

“I have life, I have friends, we do stuff on weekends.” Translation: if you go to my school you most likely do not have a life.

“Why are you moving all the way to [insert school]??? [insert local school] offers that program as well”

or when I tell them where im transferring to I always get people who say “Why? Do you have family there or something?”

I just dont get why its so unheard of to most people to actually move away for school.

I agree with AtomicCafe. Your parents are paying for your education. You choose what you want to do with it, its on you. Screw up, thats your problem. Its going to be very hard to fix your mistakes.

I tried having a life once… It’s overrated.

I hate when I’m having a hard time with a class, and people are just like “Oh, that’s easy, you shouldn’t be having any trouble with it.”

xSteven, no one is twisting your arm to get along with AtomicCafe or any of the rest of us…so…don’t act like we are. If you don’t agree with us, then fine. And elbeeeeeeen, I don’t think anything AtomicCafe said makes college sound “overrated.” There are plenty of years after college which will be awesome; life does not end at 22. It’s the parties, hookups, and ditching that are overrated, not college itself. And as a Psych major, personally I do feel people are kind of jerks for assuming I can’t do jack **** with my major.

I know… I didn’t act like anyone was trying to convince me of anything. I was just saying that I really don’t think I’d get along with him/her because I have opposing views on almost everything he/she said. I guess because I actually do like partying, hooking up, and ditching. Oh well. Since I couldn’t think of anything that people tell me about college that annoys me, I’ll steal yours and definitely agree that it’s very annoying when people say I can’t do anything with a psych major!

Really, CC? The “s” word is not a curse word. That’s like saying sex is a bad word. Honestly, the level of censorship these days…ridiculous.

Hate to be that guy, but you really can’t do anything with a Bachelors in Psychology. The only real option is graduate school.

Prove me wrong.

I agree with you. It annoys me that people say it all the time, not that it’s true or false. It’s annoying to have to repeat “I’m going to graduate school in psych when I graduate here.”
