Name your top ten favorite movies.

I don't think it's a good list of the best movies ever made, artistically or intellectually, but i think it's a good list of "the greatest movies" in the eyes of the American public, great meaning something very different from best. i don't agree with the order, but that especially is just so subjective.

i personally hate star wars, indiana jones, and most spielberg, but they're great american movies like elvis is a great american singer.

My top 10, in no particular order:
Almost Famous
Pride and Prejudice (the BBC one with Colin Firth)
The Constant Garderner
Gone With the Wind
10 Things I Hate About You
Monty Python's The Meaning of Life
The Rocky Horror Picture Show
The Breakfast Club
Bridget Jones' Diary
Henry V (Kenneth... of course!)

and a few more, because I'm a rebel...
Zoolander
Moulin Rouge
The Corporation
Mean Girls (hilarious)
The Royal Tenenbaums
CRAZY (score one for Canadian films)
Braveheart, but I'm in love with a scotsman, so you never know...
and of course, Bond! My favs of which are Goldfinger, Casino Royale, Goldeneye, and From Russia With Love

I like most movies, with the notable exception of horror movies and stupid teen ones like American Pie or Scary Movie. I have a 15 year old brother, and see way too much of those... :S

Moulin Rouge

The Producers

The Lord of the Rings

Eurotrip

V for Vendetta

The Aviator

Sin City

Saving Private Ryan

The Red Violin

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen

No particular order.

Dr Strangelove, Little Miss Sunshine, Legally Blonde, Indiana Jones, Pirates, Sense and Sensibility, Casablanca,

Guilty Pleasures:
Love Actually, Bridget Jones's Diary, any Hugh grant film.

"8. Legally Blonde- You know you love it."

What is with the Legally Blonde love on this thread?!?!

"i personally hate star wars, indiana jones, and most spielberg, but they're great american movies like elvis is a great american singer."

Of course. These films don't really compare to the power of many others- neither Star Wars nor Indiana Jones were really created for any reason other than entertainment (although I suppose that Star Wars -tries- to introduce several themes/ ideas... but that doesn't count =D). And, I think that that's okay. Sometimes I just want to sit down on the couch with my friends and some popcorn and watch lasers and giant rolling boulders =)

"I don't think it's a good list of the best movies ever made, artistically or intellectually, but i think it's a good list of "the greatest movies" in the eyes of the American public, great meaning something very different from best."

I could see the argument here, but even so, I still don't think the list was that great. Annie Hall was ranked higher than The Godfather Part II. Braveheart was overlooked but a less-prestigious movie from the same year wasn't (Fargo). The Sting, a very well-known movie that won Best Picture in 1973, was overlooked. These are just a few of the problems I have with the list.

I like Legally Blonde because it so easy to watch. And funny.

Amelie
Gone with the Wind
The Graduate
Election
The Royal Tenenbaums
The Hours
Moulin Rouge
Working Girl
To Kill a Mockingbird
The Pianist

Making this list was pretty hard just because there were other films that I loved just as much as these top 10, but these are definitely my favorites.

In no particular order.

Blood Diamond

The Departed

11:14

Saw II

John Q

Waiting

Thank You for Smoking

My Girl and I Korean movie

The Rock not the wrestler

Lucky # Slevin

Amelie - Ultimate put a smile on my face movie.
Little Miss Sunshine - Laugh. Cry.
An American in Paris - I have a thing for Gene Kelly.
You've Got Mail - Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan are so cute together.
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest - Jack Nicholson is TOO awesome.
ET - Classic. And a cute Drew Barrymore!
The Sound of Music - My friend and I once decided only to watch the "good parts" but ended up watching all but like 10 minutes.
The Princess Bride - Never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line!
Close Encounters of the Third Kind - Dunno... I just like it?
Jurassic Park - The raptors are scary!

... I'm probably going to think of all the ones I forgot as soon as I post this.

Someone should vote Citizen Kane into the AFIs top most overrated films of all time. Seriously, how can you consider that to be the best film of ALL TIME?

My Top Ten Favorite Movies
1. RENT
2. Chicago
3. Dead Poet's Society
4. Legally Blonde
5. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
6. Mean Girls
7. Walk the Line
8. The Wizard of Oz
9. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
10. Annie

Citizen Kane is extremely innovative. It might not seem like a big deal these days, because everything that Citizen Kane does is common place in contemporary filmmaking. It combines so many physical techniques, such as lighting, focus, angles, and general filming, together for the first time. It might not have the best story or acting (although Welles is an incredible actor) but stylistically....man, maybe only Birth of a Nation is better.

"Citizen Kane is extremely innovative. It might not seem like a big deal these days, because everything that Citizen Kane does is common place in contemporary filmmaking."

Citizen Kane was indeed very innovative. After seeing it, I realized the impact it had on other films. Welles uses so many techinques in it that we take for granted in movies, things we don't even notice anymore. Nonetheless, it is still not the best movie all-time IMO. Perhaps it is the most groundbreaking film, but it certainly isn't the "best" movie. It is a bit overrated and isn't as good as other renowned movies from the same era like The Wizard of Oz or Casablanca.
