NAPS and Foundation stats thread?

for those of you who got accepted to NAPS or Foundation, can i ask you to briefly list your stats? (whether NAPS or Foundation, number of nominations, SAT, GPA, APs, sports, etc?)

i think it would be helpful for those of us who question whether they can get a direct appointment to usna, to see if they might still fit the profile of someone who can get NAPS or Foundation.

thanks!!

Have offer letters gone out?

Son graduated from NAPS in '07, but maybe this info is still helpful to you:
- 1 nom
- SATs ~1150
- GPA 4.0 (W)
- 4 or 5 APs (<-- no Calculus, and he learned that was a significant factor)
- 4 yrs football (w/ awards + capt. as Sr, but in a new sport @ USNA)
- ECs w/ leadership, longterm PT job.
- Everyone thinks their essay and rec's are exceptional, don't they? I thought his were.

The NAPSters I met had lowish SATs/great grades OR great SATs/lowish grades OR enlisted w/ great leadership OR recruited athletes + URMs w/ package close to optimal. The variations among them impressed me. About all they seemed to have in common was a burning desire to be @ USNA.

Good luck.

one person received their offer for NAPS yesterday which is why i started this thread.

yes NAPS appointments have been going out, I got mine maybe about a month ago.

I'm not your average "very competitive" candidate, but I received my NAPS appointment on Monday. I wrote numerous letters to USNA showing them my motivation. USAFA wasn't even interested in me, even though I fell complete in love with USAFA (I'm from CO). But I totally took NAPS!!

This arent my stats but my brothers, might be a bit outdated (USNA '07 grad, dont know the NAPS year).

SAT: 1350
GPA: 3.3 UW
Eagle Scout, Senior Patrol leader, Marching band section leader, 2 year jv, 2 varsity Basketball
Took: AP english, calc gt, physic gt senior year.

No nominations from Maryland

how did your brother even get an appointment to NAPS if he had no nominations?

A nomination is not required to enter NAPS, only when leaving NAPS for USNA.

I dont think a nomination is required for NAPS, and we were from the district that included annapolis and a county with one of the best school system in the State.

so does that mean that you can apply for naps directly? or does it mean that if you apply to the usna and end up with no nominations (even though you tried to get some), the usna could give you an appointment to NAPS as a consolation prize for not getting any nominations?

also, how can you go from NAPS to USNA without a nomination? or do the kids who graduate from NAPS automatically get a nomination?

You can't apply directly to NAPS, USNA will offer you to NAPS if they "want" you , but you aren't competitive for a because you a) have no nomination b) have a nomination and didnt receive a principle nomination and you aren't competitive for a national slot. I'm not sure how common it is to receive an offer from NAPS if you have no nominations, I suspect this only occurs in districts with very strong competition.

If you graduate from NAPS your guaranteed an appointment, not sure if they automatically give you a nomination, or they waive it for you.

To AtlantaDad: NAPS nominations have been going out since last fall when LOA started going out. My daughter knows of a few that received their NAPS offers in late 2007 for the NAPS Class of 2009. There are some in her class this year that had their offers of NAPS going into their Christmas break of their senior year of high school. These offers come out just like the appointments to the academies.

TO DSL1990: I would like to say that as a parent of a Midshipman Candidate currently attending NAPS, I do not consider it a consolation prize whatsoever. She worked very hard for that offer. She did have a nomination and most would have considered her stats very competitive. She was however never officially "Scholastically Qualified" by USNA Admission Staff. That is the one key point to the process, even if the official letter is not sent out.

Let me repeat my post of only two above. “A nomination is not required to enter NAPS, only when leaving NAPS for USNA.” NAPSters applying to the Academy will require a nomination just like all the others. They will be required to apply to all eligible nomination sources to which they applied the previous year. Additionally, they will be eligible for a SecNav nomination.

Nominations, or lack thereof, have absolutely nothing to do with the NAPS selection process. Remember that if a candidate is 3Qed, nomination or not, he is not eligible for NAPS.

listen to my mom, this place is not a consolation prize. it was hard work to get here and even harder got leave here. do not think this is an easy year.

no, you don't have to have a nomination to get here, but it makes it a hell of a lot easier to get one while you are here for the academy if you already had one.

whoever said it earlier is right, we are all here for different reasons, we all have our different strengths and weaknesses, but we have one thing in common, we showed the admissions board that all we wanted was to become an officer through USNA and we all still want that.

you are not guarenteed an appointment walking into NAPS. in fact, you are not even guarenteed an appointemnt if you graduate NAPS. appointment offers are at the descretion of the comanding officer who looks at every student before graduation to decide whether or not he/she will continue at the academy. for example, if a NAPSter starts the year with a 4.0 and then their grades steadily decrease to a 2.0 he will graduate NAPS but most likely not get an appointment because at NAPS we have to have forward progress. they expect us to do better the longer we are here.

this place is not easy but it is a great stepping stone.

hey, sorry! i didn't mean for it to sound that way :) it's just that when i was younger, my dad used to toss out my "participation" trophies from my martial arts tournaments saying that in the real world people win or lose and i should get used to it. so i've really was just raised to see things in this black and white way of winning and losing.

gl with NAPS and USNA clarinet- i'm sure you'll make a great officer in 2012! have you gotten accepted to usna yet? Go Navy!

NAPSters get their appointments in early May.

USNA69 said:
"No. At the time a record goes before the Board and it is rejected, found scholastically unqualified, they will, at that time, either recommend NAPS and Foundation or not. If the candidate is found scholastically qualified, he is not eligible for Prep programs."

so when they turn a candidate down for regular admission, how does the admission office decide between offering NAPS versus recommending Foundation? in other words, in the eyes of the USNA admissions office, what is the difference between NAPS and Foundation? what factors do they consider which might point the one way or the other?

One of the Board's best kept secrets which they do not reveal. My only obsevation is that the Foundation candidates appear to be slightly better prepared academically and they ALL participate, usually with distinction, in high school sports.

Hey everyone! I am currently a high school senior and applied for USNA c/o 2012. My application was complete with at least one official nomination on 31OCT07. I got my NAPS selection letter 7DEC07. Here are some stats and MESSAGE ME FOR MORE SPECIFICS:

***Additional Comments:
I was selected for NAPS primarily due to my poor math skills. Pretty much all 4 years, I have had a C in math and am only in Precalculus, which I currently barely have a D in. I was told I have strong leadership and physical fitness qualities. I received three nominations to USNA, and one (randomly) to USAFA. This goes along with what Navy Clarinet said, but I feel so honored to have been selected to attend NAPS and I can't wait to get there!

Any questions, just ask me! I hope this helped
