Naps Waitlist

I am currently on the waitlist for NAPS and the WAIT is killing me! They said that the board will probably let me know around mid-may to july. I dont think i can wait till july! Does anyone (Zaphod) have any info regarding the NAPS list like:

1) How far do they usually go into the waitlist?
2) Is there anything i can do to give myself a better chance?

Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Go Navy!

Please PM me and I can give you some infor that may help you. My mid was in your shoes (notice I said my mid LOL) and got in.

I have a question:

What type of stats do one have that usually have them asked to attend NAPS? Like, what are some numbers (tests/gpa/sports) that people have had in the past that have led them to NAPS?

I'm sorry to say I have nothing to offer you. In my day, there were no waiting lists that I ever heard of, and I know next to nothing about how they do it now.

As for who gets invited to attend NAPS, it is sometimes seen as the next 200-300 candidates who just barely missed getting into USNA. Not entirely accurate, but pretty close.

I'm not sure if there are any specific triggers, but in general you have to demonstrate a desire to attend USNA and an extremely good record that requires some POLISHING. That's what NAPS does. 99.9% of the time, it's academic polishing.

I am also interested in finding out more about NAPS...

I have come to the conclusion that I have a rather slim chance of gaining admission to the USNA. However, I am not aware of what is roughly needed for NAPS.

I have a 1270 SAT, 3.82 GPA, 29/243, wrestling, cross country (capt), student gov't (VP, Pres), class officer (tres)

Any ideas on how I stand?

Reiterating Colby's question: What are some stats of people who have been accepted to NAPS in the past?

This doesn't answer the initial question, but it's my understanding that USNA is moving toward a somewhat different approach to NAPS. It's primary purpose has been, and will continue to be, to provide academic and other transition to enlisted personnel headed to USNA. In the past, NAPS also had a good number of recruited athletes.

I think they are now going toward more of a financial criteria for those other than prior-enlisted. Thus, students who have the financial ability to assist with costs are more likely to be directed to a Foundation school, where there is cost-sharing, based on ability to pay, reserving more NAPS spots for those less able pay for the additional year of education.

My son is headed for NAPS in August. His stat's were 4.1 GPA w/ APs (plus capt of football team, much community service, expert marksman, DAR character award and other honors), competitive h.s. where 95% of grad's go to a 4-yr college, and ... 1150 SATs.

He got a nomination, but his test scores just weren't near the USNA average. He is over the moon to be headed for Newport. It's a wonderful option for candidates with a lot to offer, but not the perfect package. (He's not a prior enlisted, but we were prepared to pay for a traditional education.)

I hope this is helpful.

Thank you for the info NorthernCalMother. It was very helpful. And the best of luck to your son.

At the risk of sounding stupid...

From your post Northern, it sounds like there is a cost to attend NAPS. Is this true? Thanks

There is no tuition, room, or board for NAPS. In fact, you get a salary while there. Nothing earth-shattering, mind you (look up what an E-1, E-2, and E-3 makes), but better than nothing.

Sorry, JH 2007, I didn't mean to confuse you. Someone said prior enlisted who could afford to fund some of their education might be sent to Foundation instead of NAPS. I just wanted to point out that that didn't seem to be an issue w/ a right-out-of-high-school student.

As Zaphod noted, taxpayers fund NAPS, and NAPsters earn a salary.

u make a heck of a lot more at naps than u do at the academy.

LOL! Ain't that the truth! Especially Plebe Year! :D

In 1987, I made $50 per month as a Plebe. That went up to a whopping $100 per month after Christmas Leave.

I quite literally lived off what I had saved while at NAPS, and I hadn't even planned it that way!

What do they "pay" you now, Wheelah?

Oh, and just so we're clear, we're talking NET pay. The reason Plebe net pay was so low is (was?) because we were paying back all the uniforms, books, computer, etc., that we had been "issued". At NAPS, you have (had?) much less issued to you, so the net pay was higher. For those who went to NAPS from the fleet, they continue to make the pay they were making since their rate doesn't change. They do, however, lose the extras like hazardous-duty pay, etc. Still, those guys REALLY rake it in for a year!
