i dont really understand the process for attending NAPS; i know that you do not apply for it, because as you apply for USNA, you're automatically considered for NAPS. but, on what basis do they select you for NAPS?

thanks.

Well, this isn't a unique science, nor official, but I'll take a stab at answering your questions...
NAPS used to be a place strictly for selected members of the fleet to go to get back into the academic mode and brush up on particular classes so as to do well at the Academy. These fleet enlisted men and women showed exceptional potential and an officers career path. They later added some recruited athletes to the mix who, while being strong, maybe needed an extra year of academic preparation in order to do well. There is now about 1/4-1/3 or so of individuals who are neither prior enlisted nor recruited athletes. They are individuals for whatever reason, the academy really wanted, but thought that the extra prep year would be beneficial. When we first inquired about being considered for NAPS, my daughter pretty much was given the brush off. But, we made sure that her BGO, regional person and all the way on up knew that she would be honored to have any kind of endorsement or appointment from the academy; whichever route it might take. Don't know if that helped or not. But, having lived this for 1/2 year now, I can't see a better way to go to the Academy. Other than the initial pride blow (there are a LOT of people who don't understand what an honor it is and think you just couldn't get into college) I can't find a down side to it; nor can my daughter. Of course, she doesn't love the place. It is hard. But, this year is proving to be so helpful to her.

Anyway, hope that at least sort of answered your ??s.
Good luck.

ok, thanks a mil. but....

what do they look at to get accepted to NAPS?
well, it seems kinda ovius, but just in case it isn't...

and NAPS is such a good way into USNA; by plebe year, you already have about 200+ friends from NAPS, u can just wink at each other while getting yelled at. oh, NAPS graduates are usually the leaders in USNA. =)

VCM,
Private email me for some more info. :)

ok, il do it later today. thanks a mil

I was recently accepted to go to NAPS starting in July. i Cant wait! for anyone going to NAPs this year i heard they made a huge cut in terms of who they let in. For NAPS students, USNA admissions chooses about 200 people out of about 10,000 people to go to NAPS! its def a great opportunity and i can't wait

trust me you can wait... :/ if you want the blunt version of how NAPS is really like you can email me too. It's not that bad but just enjoy civilian life while you still can.
