The school I'm applying to has a few topic choices to write my essay about. Should I just write an essay answering the topic question or try to incorporate more personal things about me in it? I have read a lot of advice about a personal essay but I have no idea what to do here.

Also how many words would a college application essay typically be?

"Please write a carefully constructed essay on ONE of the following topics:
What are your three favorite words in the English language and what do they mean to you?.
Discuss the neighborhood that you grew up in and how it shaped you as a person.
Describe how do you feel about the month of February?.
If life does exist on another planet, should we attempt to communicate with this form of life or leave well enoough alone? Why?"

Whoa these are pretty interesting.

I personally would go with one of the first two. However, I don’t know much about you. Which questions are you leaning toward at the moment? Try brainstorming possible answers to each of them and see which one gets you the most rambling. Think about which one made you smile or really think.

I’m leaning towards the first two as well. I mean, the first one really made me think and I’d like to explore it but need a nudge on how to begin. I think I have more material for the second one but its less interesting to me… hmmm

These are definitely the kinds of essays that the college would want both creativity and risk in. They want to hear your thoughts, identify your level of writing, and evaluate your personality. So make it original, risky, and about something that you are passionate about.
