i met with my college counselor for the 1st time this week and discovered there are about 20 schools i'm interested in, but 3/4 of them are ivies/ivy-status. she says im not dreaming about those schoos, but i need to narrow down the schools i'm interested in and pick a couple of good safeties. any good advice?

Your not applying for Sept 2005 are you, if yes then the list has already been narrowed.

1) Don't apply to any school you wouldn't want to go to.
2) Make sure you have an academic and financial safety.
3) Have an honest convesation with your parents about finances.
4) Visit the schools you are interested in and take excellent notes.
5) Use the web to find out everything you can about the school including where their graduatates go, what their weather, crime, events (in and around the college) are like (try reading the local papers.
6) Check out the majors, the professors, the extras that are offerred and match them to your personality and learning style and academic goals.
7) Make a list of all the things you want and see which ones the colleges on your list match. Having 20 schools to me would indicate, I didn't do enough research or haven't faced the tough truth about what I want and what I am willing to do. Good luck

for some ideas from CC posters, list your gpa, test scores and current schedule. Also your academic and career interests, and and info on the college size, location etc you think you'd prefer.

picture yourself in the school, do you honestly see yourself there. I know I wanted to apply to some schools because of their name but when i was honest to myself and just put myself in the situation of attending for 4 years, i didn't want to apply anymore.
