My daughter did well on her ACT's 31 and SAT's 2120. We live in Western NY but would like to look at all options across the country for school for her. She is undeclared as a major. I understand there are full and partial merit scholarships available for those scores. How can I find out what type of scholarships are available? Does anyone have any recommendations for any of these scholarships or schools? Is there anything to watch out for as far as fees ? If she does poorly her first semester does the scholarship go away?

what is her Math + CR score from ONE sitting?

If it is a 1400 and a 3.5 gpa, then Alabama would give her free tuition. she would not lose the award after one semester. Bama evaluates after spring semester and if the student doesnt have a 3.0 cum, then he/she is put on notice, and then the following fall, the student must get a 3.0 to keep the award…so it is a lenient policy.

Bama has a fair number of New Yorkers attending, so do check it out. the campus is gorgeous, the academics are strong, and the people are friendly.

the Bama app is Live now, so apply and have an acceptance and large award within weeks. the app is super easy…takes like five minutes…no essays, no LORs.

what are her fave classes? I know she would be undeclared.

Here is my financial picture

My net worth is over $2 million including my home. Mostly real estate… $200 k in retirement and 75k in a 529 plan.

I make $50,000 from a family business and $50,000 net from the real estate for a total of $100,000 income per year

Of the 75k in the 529 plans
Child #1 Samantha has $35,000 in a 529 plan
Child #2 Michael has $40,000 in a 529 plan

Here is my family picture

I have 5 children. Their ages are 16,15,13,10,and 7.

doesnt look like you qualify for need based aid, so big merit is the way to go.

Look at the pinned threads at the top of this forum. Some are for assured merit aid and one is on colleges which cost <$25K.

Do look at the SUNYs. Buffalo is a great deal, with almost certain $2500 bonus and honors college privileges. Look at Fordham, Fairfield. UDenver has merit as well if you want to look further away. As Erin’s Dad suggests, look at the pinned threads.

If her ACT is 2 points higher, she could try University at Buffalo’s Presidential Scholarship. See http://admissions.buffalo.edu/costs/meritscholarships.php.

This is directed to mom2college kids…Tell me more about non-competitve full ride merit like Alabama . What other schools do this?

Alabama is the highest ‘ranking’ that gives the large automatics. List of automatic scholarships that are 1/2 or full tuition.
http://automaticfulltuition.yolasite.com/

^^^

Yes.

Alabama is the highest ranking school that gives such big assured awards for stats. It is unusual. there are some lower ranked schools with large assured awards.

You should visit; you would be impressed.

@fatheroffive

be aware, thought, the award for having a 1400+ is for full tuition (not a full ride which would include room, board, etc).

what is your D’s M+CR score?

Thankyou…
sorry not sure what a M+CR score is? She only took the test once.

Temple University also gives full tuition scholarships for an SAT Math and Critical Reading score of 1400 or higher. Your daughter would need to get her ACT up to a 32 for the Temple scholarship. Alabama is higher ranked, but here in Philadelphia, graduating from the Temple Honors College is certainly very well regarded and an Alabama degree probably doesn’t carry as much weight with many parochial Philly area employers. Temple, however, is an urban campus, smack in the middle of rundown and often unsafe North Philadelphia. My daughter will not apply there, even though she could attend for free (as a commuter - room and board is extra). She is, however, applying to Alabama as its more traditional residential college experience and lovely campus (at least it looks that way in the pictures) appeals to her. Some kids really like the vibrancy and diversity an urban college has to offer, but my daughter is not one of them.

The math and critical reading sections of the SAT (excluding the writing). Some scholarships use only the sum of those two parts, not the sum of all three.

ahhhh gotcha…She scored a 1400 on SAT for M+CR

Wondering what the cut off date is at most schools for presidential merit scholarships…Is it November 1st?

It is really school dependent. Check the web sites or assume earlier (like 1 Nov)

thanks… we are in the early stages of “narrowing down the choices” but didnt want to miss on the one she decides if there is one available… For the sake of time I was wondering if there is “merit scholarship list” for due dates somewhere on this site…

You can go through the usual lists of merit scholarships, go to the school web sites, and then see what the due dates are.

Note that there may be first-come-first-served otherwise-automatic-for-stats scholarships, like the ones at Howard. In those cases, applying as early as possible would be beneficial.

It’s probably faster to make your own list – list all the colleges that will be applied to, look up their websites for deadlines.
