I have made a huge list of colleges and I have visited almost all of them. None of them stood out particularly but none of them faded into the background of my mind either. I know around the size of school that I want, how else do I continue narrowing down my list of schools? I'm not going to be applying early decision and I don't want to apply to more than 10 schools. How do I go about looking at the departments that I'm interested in? Of course all of the college websites aren't going to say anything negative about any of their departments. Would people be willing to help me with my college list and what I want out of a school if I posted it?

You’ll find that there are loads of people on CC who love doing that. Fire away.

People will absolutely help you. Just post your list and I’m sure lots of people will like to assist. Good Luck on your search!

Oh wow wonderful. Okay well I don’t know what I want to do as a job in the future so I’m mainly looking at departments that I’m interested in. I’m really interested in psychology, French, mythology (so a school with a Classics major that would offer these types of classes), and biology. I think in the future I might want to do something with animals but I don’t want to be a vet so if that changes anything. I am looking for a school mostly between 3,000-8,000 undergrad.

GPA: 3.81 career unweighted
Grades: For the most part A’s, with mostly Honors and AP classes
Scores: 2070 SATs (I’m retaking them in 2ish weeks)
34 ACTs
SAT IIs - World History 700, U.S. History 690, French 540
I’m fine with my activities outside of school (I’m a figure skater which takes up a LOT of time and I have been doing it since I was 4). I do regular volunteer work.

As of now I’m mostly looking at schools in the Southeast, with a few in the Northeast and West.

University of Virginia
Vanderbilt University
College of William and Mary
University of Pennsylvania
University of Richmond
Washington and Lee University
Lehigh University
Georgetown University
Duke University
Gettysburg College
Haverford College
Stanford University
Pomona College
Bucknell University
Wake Forest University
Colgate University
Amherst College

I know it’s pretty big list, which is why I need help narrowing it down. Also I think I need more safety schools since most of them are very difficult to get into. Any insight about any of these schools that might help me would be appreciated! Also, I want Greek life to be a part of my college experience (I am aware that not of these colleges have Greek life). Also any other possible suggestions would help me out a lot. Thanks!

You should delete UVirginia since it is almost twice as big as what you desire (15000) as well as Penn. At the other end of the spectrum, Amherst, Haverford, Washington & Lee,and I think Gettysburg are too small. Maybe add Emory and Northwestern and Dartmouth.

Start narrowing down regarding location (north/south, urban/rural) and your list will become even more manageable.

Good luck.

These are all good schools. Like doctorb said, some of these are a bigger (U Virginia) and some are smaller (Amherst, Haverford, etc.) than you said you might like. Is this a reason to eliminate them from your list? It’s up to you.

I would make sure you have one or two true safeties, and several reaches. It seems like you have many, many match-ish type schools on your list. (College of William and Mary, University of Richmond, Washington and Lee University, Lehigh University, Gettysburg College, Bucknell University). Maybe try editing these down based on location, size, majors etc.?

I’m also really into classics and have been researching schools with good classics departments. I would definitely keep some reaches on your list, because many of the “Top” schools seem to have very strong classics departments.

Good Luck in your search!
