...so Mom is saying that nine colleges is just to many to apply to, mainly because of the application fees. How should I go about narrowing down this list?

I want to go to a LAC with a strong art department since I will be majoring/focusing in studio arts, so can anyone strike any of these schools off the list from just that standpoint?

I'm in my second year of college now, and feel it is EXTREMELY important that I get into a school that can really help me in my artistic pursuits, but also that truly 'fits' me... thus wanting to give myself plenty of chances to get into such a school... nine doesn't seem like that terribly many.

Obviously, finance is an issue, so could anyone strike off any of these schools for not being at all generous with financial aid?

They're at varying levels of selectivity, so you might want to take one or two reaches, one or two matches, and maybe a safety.

Wait, you're in your second year of college so you'll be applying as a transfer, right?

Oberlin I've heard is more of a music school than an art one.
Conneticut I don't know much about, but from what I've heard it's probably the least artsy LAC on that list.

Sarah Lawrence and Hampshire have unique academic calendars, programs, etc. Check those out if you haven't already done so.

Tell your mom that tuition alone is 50 times all the application fees. Apply to all and see what kind of aid you can get (aid is usually tough for transfers to garner). One school might unexpectedly surprise you, unfortuately we don't know what school this may be, so a few hundred dollars might save you thousands later in tuition.

Wesleyan and Vassar are U.S. News Best Values, but all bets are off for transfers. Cooper Union is tuition free but extremely competitive.
