So as of now my college list has 10 schools on it and I am really trying to narrow it down:
Quick stats:
Gpa: 3.75/4.64 Uw/w
Highest Act in one sitting:31
Superscore: 32
EC’s etc.
I thought I wanted a big school and love going to big schools and football games but when I go to smaller schools(5,000-10,000) I seem to like it more. I am a Pennsylvania resident and am not really sure about what I want to major in but I do know I want to go to Med school after(I already know you should go to cheapest school for pre med). My parents are giving me about 20,000 a year and the rest is on me.
My list:
Pitt-already applied, financial safety if scholarships don’t work out at other schools
Ohio state- aiming for national buckeye making it cheaper than pitt
Butler u- free to apply to so…
Wvu- free to apply to and they already have my test scores when I sent them for free
Kentucky- hoping to potentially interview for one of full tuition scholarships
Umiami- love this school a ton and am really hoping to somehow pay for it but I am smart enough to know not to take out loans if I can go somewhere cheaper. Chances of winning the lottery are slim to none.
Ualabama- mom really want me to apply here because I can probably get some merit(never toured but looks amazing and love the school spirit)
These last three are Florida state-schools. My dad is a Florida resident with Florida voters registration and a Florida license. He believes that I can get instate tuition and my parents are moving to the state when I graduate high school.
Uf- like this school a lot but don’t think I will get in
Usf- like this school and their programs, can maybe get money, but not the same school spirit/atmosphere I felt at other schools
Fsu- haven’t visited yet but looks really nice and would try for honors program.
The schools I’m considering taking off my list are Fsu, Alabama, and Kentucky(really don’t want to). I also realize that I am not guaranteed money or admission to any of these schools but I am hopeful. All I am asking us to help me decide whether or not applying to all ten is a smart idea.
Your post is a bit confusing. You say you like schools in the 5-10k range but most of choices are state flagship schools. You also did not mention a major other than med school. I would also go to those FL schools web addresses to see what is required to gain residency. I doubt your parents moving there after you graduate is going to qualify you. Really need to know what type school you want to attend before being able to offer you any advice. Since med school is on the horizon I would certainly make merit aid and cost my main factors.
@Grainraiser sorry it probably is really confusing. I’ve been to multiple large state schools for tours and events and have loved the time I spent there. However, when I go on a smaller school(5-10k) I seen to Like it more. That has only been with two schools though. With the Florida thing, I know moving there wouldn’t qualify me, but my dad’s already a Florida resident. I have said time and time again that I don’t think I’ll get instate Tuition but he has talked to different schools and apparently I do qualify.
Since your responsible for everything over 20k I would look at schools in which you can get merit aide. No need of looking at a school you will have to take out loans to attend. Save those loans for med school. Butler and Miami are the only small schools on your list and they are privates. What kind of merit aid you can receive would determine those two schools. All the others have over 20k students so if your wanting a school half that size none of those are going to work. Just reading between the lines I think you want a small/medium size school with a vibrant sports scene that will offer merit aid. Is this correct.
Actually, you’re guaranteed ⅔ tuition off at Alabama (raise ACT to 32 single sitting and that becomes full tuition) and I believe you qualify for in state tuition at FSU based on your stats.
And for smaller colleges with school spirit, run net price calculators for some of the (D1) patriot’s league schools and maybe Tulane. They likely won’t meet your cost constraints, but it’s possible.
