I did a quick google and came up with this:

First, you enroll in the online community (deadline Jan 8). Then, if you remain an active part of the online community (and you fulfill other requisites), you can apply to the summer program (assuming there's funding).

Tier 1 (NASA Explorers): Rising 10th-grade students compete for a one-day visit to a NASA facility with a VIP Tour and Workshop at a NASA center.

Tier 2A (Collegiate Experience): Rising 11th-grade students compete to participate in a two-week, on-campus residential experience at a college or university selected by NASA. This exposure to college students and faculty is designed to improve study skills and encourage the pursuit of higher education and careers in STEM areas. The college or university provides lodging, meals, supervision and educational activities.

Tier 2B (Residential Internship): Rising 12th-grade students who will be at least 16 years of age compete to participate in a paid summer internship at a NASA facility. Students gain valuable on-the-job experience by working directly with NASA scientists and engineers during the workday and will participate in enriching after-work educational and cultural activities. During the internship, students are provided:
--A stipend based on minimum wage for the state in which the NASA facility is located and a lunch allowance
--Meals and housing at a location within commuting distance from the NASA facility.
--Transportation to and from work and required project activities.
--On-site supervision and structured enrichment activities after work hours.

During non-work hours students interact with qualified, experienced and highly motivated professional educators. These educators provide supervision and implement the enrichment activities and cultural activities during after-work hours. During working hours, students are supervised and mentored by scientists and engineers at the NASA center.

Tier 3 (Collegiate Internship): Rising college freshmen who will be at least 16 years of age compete for participation in a paid summer internship at a NASA facility. Applicants for this experience must have been accepted at a college or university and have declared a major in a science, technology, engineering or mathematics, or STEM, field. The Tier 3 experience provides valuable on-the-job training and introduces the students to a variety of education and employment opportunities. Lodging, meals, transportation and after-work activities are the responsibility of the student. NASA will pay the student a stipend of $5,000 in three installments, provided all requirements have been met.

NASA INSPIRE

like what do you do in the online community

im just gonna assume that the rising 12th grade internship is like harder to get into than harvard but if anyone knows the statistic could they post it

Interesting. NASA used to have a purely summer program, but it folded several years ago. Looks like it's been reinvented.

University of Oklahoma is handling administration for the program. Application website is insane - passwords don't work, very buggy. Never did make it through the application without a system disconnect. I wonder if they had many applicants who made it throught the process?

What do you do in the on-line community? What every they want you to do - and shine. They make the final selection for the summer internships based on the person that they come to know during the on-line period.

Yay! I made it into the online community! Did anyone else apply? I wonder how many people were accepted for that stage.

Yeah I applied and was accepted to the online community too. I had a friend that participated at the Kennedy Space Center last year. Seemed like an awesome opportunity. I guess they'll be emailing us again with the next step?

yup i made it too except im not sure what to do now it seems that the OLC is not open yet? anyone get in yet cuz im lost

I applied too and was accepted. OLC is up, at least for me.

my son is in the nasa inspire program. the site is quite buggy and it is hard to get on the live chats. the webinar about the summer program indicated that they took 60 kids out of 400 applicants… we’ll see if it was worth the large amount of work …lhe earned lots from the projects though even if he does not make the cut and enjoyed the different challenges

My son got into the summer collegiate experience for the Puerto Rico session! He did so much work for this all year long and really learned a lot. I am so excited for him. This is a great program and it is all expenses paid, even the airfare!

kayakmom

How did your son do?

he got into the summer program! he’ll be a va tech. he reflected a lot on his experience…it was lots and lots of work but he learned that nasa is so much more than rockets. it really opend his eyes to so many new careers and opportunities.

Congrats to you and him Kayakmom!

Do you have any idea how many kids got in? From what we are figuring, it looks like somewhere around only 20 rising sophomores per location. That would translate to only 60 students nationwide!

Is your son planning on trying for one of the internships next summer?
