I’m looking into possibly doing a NASA internship after sophomore or junior year, but on the website they fail to mention whether lodging is provided or not. I know they have dorms at Huntsville due to Space Camp, but if those aren’t available to high school interns, it’d be out of the question. Help.
You should call/email them to ask about their overnight/lodging options for interns. If that’s not possible, go over to Summer Programs (if you haven’t already) to ask.
Since most HS interns don’t live within the vicinity, I’m sure they’ll have housing or relocation policies. For example, my internship (not at NASA) gave a $2500 stipend for living arrangements if you had to relocate. If you really want, you can search more on their website or contact them directly.
NASA internships are typically 10 weeks long and pay a stipend of $6000. They do not provide housing unless the internship is specifically listed as “residential,” which is uncommon for NASA. It’s generally expected that you use the internship stipend to cover transportation and housing costs. Most of NASA’s high school internships (that is, internships only open to high school students) require that you live within a certain radius (usually 50 miles) of the center the internship is located. Other internships, open to both high school and college students, don’t have a proximity requirement but you are responsible for your own housing, transportation, etc. If you haven’t already, go to intern.nasa.gov and make an account. That’s how you search their internships and apply for them. You’ll also see specific requirements for each internship opportunity - they vary a little from internship to internship, so pay close attention to those!
Generally though, you’re on your own for housing. There might be a few exceptions, but they’re pretty rare, so make sure you do your research on each opportunity before-hand! Even if you don’t get an internship in high school, starting to apply now will help you get used to the application process and get your name out there. I think the application period opens in late November or early December for summer internships.
(Note: NASA might give you some resources to find roommates for internships so you can reduce your individual cost of living. As a federal agency, they’re not allowed to endorse any specific companies, so they can’t help you find an apartment, but they should be able to connect you with other interns who are also looking for housing.)
