Nasa Sharp Chances?

Hi everybody, I'm sorry if this isn't the right board to post this in but I am desperate to know what my chances are for NASA Sharp this summer.

I don't have very good stats but I have a very good essay and recomendations. I really want to get into this program and I was wondering if somebody could tell me my chances. (Please:))

White Female, Sophomore
Straight A's (including Pre-calculus) except B+ in Biology
Learning Visual Basic and C++
Volunteering at local hospital
Compete internationally in my sport
PSAT: 189 (I know, I didn't study and am hoping to improve)
SAT: Taking Jan. 22
ACT: Taking in February

Thanks, I'll be applying for the residential program!

I would really appreciate anybody's input on my chances. Please!!!!!!!
Thanks!

You probably have a pretty good chance, especially if you're minority.

Almost certainly not. I did SHARP last summer. The one asian (of 20 students) had a 1600. Asians who applied from my school and were rejected were subsequently accepted early to Harvard. The standards for whites are hardly lower... one of the caucasian girls had been admitted to Princeton. The program caters extremely heavily towards minorities, with minorities comprising anywhere from 60 to 70 percent of the group. You must be expectional to be admitted as a non-minority, and, frankly, your stats are not exceptional even for a minority.

Hate to seem harsh. I would definitely apply though, considering there's nothing to lose. But be sure to consider other programs as well.

hey fozoh, 'sup? didn't know you posted on these boards

to the original poster: you definitely have a shot, being a minority does help, but if you're not one, you still have a shot. make sure to express your interest in science through your application. contrary to what kentuckyfriedbeef said, if you're asian, you do NOT need a 1600. i am asian and i got into sharp with a score (at that time) in the 1400s. there were non-minority kids in the program who had sat scores in the 1000-1200s range so it's obvious that scores are not a big deal. so, maybe i was just lucky to get in, but it shows that everyone, no matter what, has a chance. i highly suggest that you devote some time to this application, because if you get in, it'll be the BEST summer of your life. good luck =)

Thanks for the suggestions. I will probably still apply and was thinking I might have a shot since I am female. I'm a little disappointed I guess to hear that being female doesn't help as much as I thought it did. Oh well, do you guys have any other suggestions for summer programs?

I did not mean to imply that you need a 1600 if you're Asian. I simply meant that the bar is set higher for non-minorities. It probably also depends on which program you apply to (New York City vs. Kansas?), and whether you apply for the commuter or residential program. Definitely give it a shot and see what happens.

Hey Kentucky Fried, is the program purposely geared to attract minorities? Because if it does then it would make sense that the program is 60- 7o% minority. Also, being female should help because of the lack of women in aeronautics or engineering period. Finally,
"You must be expectional to be admitted as a non-minority, and, frankly, your stats are not exceptional even for a minority." What the hell is this supposed to mean?

I forgot to mention that I was born partially deaf. Do you guys think this will hurt or help my chances at NASA Sharp?

How do you Sharpies know so much about people's scores? This year's application does not ask for scores. I don't think that last year's did, either. Did you send scores anyway?

NSM, last year's app did ask about scores. I don't recall any section on this year's app referring to scores though. I guess Sharpies know about other people's scores because standardized testing was something that came up sometimes in conversations (makes sense since everybody was a rising junior/senior).

zpmqxonw: I don't think being born partially deaf will affect your chances either way.
