Nasa Sharp

To all those that went to NASA Sharp, how was it? Was it difficult to get in? Did you choose commuter or residential? Hmm, please just post any information/advice you have in regards to that program.

Also, have you guys heard of the Institute of Educational Advancement? Is that (as) good?

hmmm... never heart of that Institute, srry... but i did do nasa sharp last summer. I chose the residential part because there aren't any bases near me (i live in new mexico), and they put me in madison, wi. I don't think it was that difficult to get in... If you aren't a minority or female, then it's harder to get in, but you still have a chance (there were a few white males in our group). I don't think they're really looking for high test scores or gpa, just a strong demonstrated interest in one of the STEM+G fields. Well anyway, I loved it, and I'm still friends w/about half of the people that went. Wisconsin wasn't bad, but I heard other people had it a lot better (like at CalState). But, no matter where they put you, you're bound to have an excellent time, and it really prepares you for college (and you get paid - a lot!) Hope that helps...

Okay, so i looked at the Nasa Sharp website and thought it was a good progam, so im gonna apply to it and rsi next summer (im a sophmore right now). Only problem is that one the site i think i remembered seeing something about how you have to be a citizen. Im a minority and everything (indian) but im not an american passport holder. Will this end my chances of getting into NASA SHARP?

RSI with it's 5% acceptance rate... lol, I have no research experience and I've yet to take my SAT I/IIs so I think I'll save myself the trouble of contributing to their 95% rejection rate. Reading that forum might have given me some issues with self-esteem. :)

Pyroman - On their site, http://www.nasasharp.com/ , under Elegibility, it says the following:

The applicant must:

-Be a U.S. citizen or national* who will be at least 16 years old by the time the program starts in June.
*A “national of the United States” is a citizen of the United States or a native resident of a possession of the United States. It does NOT refer to a citizen of another country who is a U.S. permanent resident. U.S. permanent residents are not eligible for the program, unless they comply with the Child Citizen Act of 2000, Public Law 106-395.

nufrosh09, they pay you? Hmm, I wasn't aware of that. lol, this just makes the program sound better and better.

CalState is by far the best program

you do get paid national min. wage $5.15 an hour and you work 40 hrs a week

Residential is great where as commuter you dont get the same feel
Apply to residential no matter what.

I and another person on this site went to CalState for NASASHARP
One difference between acceptance to this programs and to RSI is NASA does not weigh your SAT score anywhere as close as that of RSI.
The avg score was prob. 1350(we had very highs and some below 1300) at NASA SHARP for Calstate where as RSI has an avg sat score of over 1500.

You get paid but plan to spend a couple hundred dollars for the entire trip of your own money.'

I have a huge post of NASA SHARP at CALSTATE . Just search for it under my posts.

Why Cal State was better than the other sites
-The director wants to be known to have the best program and makes sure of it
-We are in LA, good weather and a huge city so you can do a new thing everyweekend day for 8 weeks
- Appartments - we did not have dorms, we had huge apartments on campus, I had a TV in mine and people were always over a blast, its great to have extra room so u dont have to go to some rec room
- We do stuff on F, sat, and sun were we go away from the college and work for the entire day to have fun. During the entire 8 weeks i think we got one sunoff to do nothing but work on our projects and other stuff
- Work sites , we dont work on campus, we commute from Calstate mon-thurs to our worksites

This year 20 students attended the program at Cal State, L.A. Each student worked alongside a mentor at one of three locations: Boeing Integrated Defense Systems (BIDS), Boeing Satellite Systems (BSS), and Northrop Grumman Space Technology (NGST). The students also participated in a variety of enrichment activities and visited many interesting places in California.

Check our site out

The only thing that wasnt great was the smog of socal and that we ahd to cook for ourselves, after a long day you do not want to spend time cooking.
All the other sites were able to get food at their colleges. You are also always on the run doing something at the Calstate site,so prepare to not be able to rest for a day or even afew hours a t that

At work you get a cubical, a few people got part of an office and one person had to share a big cubical.

My cubical on the tenth floor was 105 sqft and their was an open office next to my cube that had a great view of LAX, LA airport.

Apply to NASA SHARP residential and hope to get CalState

Wow, thanks for that post. Now I really want to go. Hmm, well the thing is I live in Cali, so I kinda wanted to get away, but the prog at Cal-State does sound fun. Do you know their admissions rate? The application is due Feb 14th and I'm taking the March 12th SAT's and I've yet to take any SATIIs. Will that (neg) affect my chances?

I'm going to go search for your other post now. =)

EDIT: Just read a couple of your other posts and realized you live in Cali too. Clarification: I live in LA. Heh, well in LA County anyways.

Mmm, found your other post. 12.7%. Well that's daunting...

ya i live in California,
Norcal central coast area

i was the only person out of California to be placed at CalState

If you want to go to CalState center for NASA SHARP make sure for your interests page on the app you make it focus around aerospace

Most people wanted to go into engineering and there were a few people at CalState who basically prayed every night to become astronauts.

Astronauts are awesome. Thanks for the advice. Can you (and anyone who got accepted) please post your stats at that time? Mmm, hope I'm not over-reacting by asking for all this info, but I just really want to get in. Would the fact that I have no standarized test scores affect my acceptance rate?

Mmm, I suppose I'll have my PSAT scores by then.

189 i don't think is bad, when you factor in that you're a sophomore.
I really can't tell your chances, b/c I never went to one, either.

I can't tell anyone's chances either, but I can wish them all luck. =D So good luck to all.
