Nasa Sharp

okie dokie... lemme stress that I don't think nasa sharp's THAT concerned with test scores, gpa, rank, etc. (don't get me wrong, i'm sure it matters), but I KNOW that they are looking for a HUGE demonstrated interest in STEM+G fields, so in your interests and especially your essay, make it clear why you like science/math and what you have done to prove that... if you make it as a finalist, they'll do a telephone interview, and for mine, they asked me what i had done in the science/math fields, and i was at a total loss, until I remembered a research project on alt. fuels that i did and that saved me... some of the other kids were like on robotics teams or sci olympiad or volunteered at a hospital, etc. if you're worried about your stats, just try to focus on mainly your ec's that involve science/math... hope that helps... GOOD LUCK!

Um. Many have mentioned the STEM+G fields, but what are they exactly?

Also, for the recs, is it okay if I give my Science Rec to my AP Stats teacher?

science, technology, engineering, mathematics + geography

if it's a science rec, give it to the science teacher.

hey guys do you think me having a pilot's license will help? ( just on a side note I think I am going to wait to apply until I am a junior so that I will have my pilot's license) I have a huge interest in aero/astro mostly b/c of flying...I haven't taken the SAT's yet but I got a mediocre 195 on my PSAT's...I have gotten straight A's in all my classes, albeit one B+ last year in freshman english.....I'm a white female sophomore right now......hmmm....and I know my teachers will write me very good recs and I know I can write one kickass essay...what do you think?

is it okay to give my Science Seminar and AP Stats teacher the Science rec (and AP Calc for Math rec). I do have a AP Chem teacher, but would Stat + Indepedent Research class count as science? Will they care much?

and theblumuffin: do you fly R/C by any chance?

I don't fly r/c...do you?

yep~. If you enjoy flying (and building things), i think you'd enjoy R/C. Give it a go! (and of course, if you like photograph on top of that, aerial photography!!)

theblumuffin - I think you have a great shot!

danielsjang - if you do scientific research in your Science Seminar, then I would say use that teacher because it is relevant to the sharp program, otherwise, I would use your Chem teacher.

I'll definetely try to try it out!

Would it be alright to give one rec to a math teacher and the science rec to the engineering teacher?

Also, there's the checkbox where you can apply both residential and commuter. I live about 50 mi or less from CSULA but if I apply to both, does that mean that if they don't reject me immediately, they'll automatically reject me from residential and put me on commuter? Or does this increase my chances of getting into the NASA SHARP program as a whole, cuz if I don't get into residential, I'll still have a chance at commuter?

EDIT: Btw, I really want to get into residential. But it'd be awesome to just get in.

I also really would love to get into NASA Sharp, and had a few more questions. I would like to believe that I have a reasonable shot because I love science and math but I am afraid that my ec's don't show that. I often do more of the unorganized science stuff such as experimenting at home and reading from science books/magazines. I am a highly motivated female, but was just wondering if somebody who's been to this program before or knows about it could post the average stats of most "sharpies." Also, does being a female count as being a minority? I have heard yes and no to this question and am a little confused at the moment.
Thanks!

You must apply to both commuter and residential. This will definitely increase your odds of getting into a NASA SHARP program. CSULA is a residential program. The nearest residential program for you is JPL in Pasadena. The only other residential program in Southern California is at Edwards Air Force Base.

The worst thing to be admissions time for the program is a White, Asian, or Indian male. At nearly all of the programs the girls will out number the guys. At CSULA there were 12 girls and 8 guys. Being a girl helps a lot as seen by the numbers. The program that runs NASA SAHRP is women owned or something like that.

what do i put for the stem section and the references section? i'm confused.

SchoolDuh0610

Hate to break it to you, but if you get into the residential component, they will NOT put you anywhere within 50 miles of where you live... I live in Albuquerque, NM, and they have a residential site here, but they didn't put me here because I live so close. If you get into the residential, they will most likely send you to another state. If you live within 50 miles of a COMMUTER site, and you get accepted into it, then they'll put you in that...

I talked to this one girl who went to JPL for NASA Sharp and she loved it there, so I won't be heartbroken if I don't get into residential. If I do get in and I get to fly outa state, I wouldn't mind either =). Just hoping to get into program now!

Good luck getting in, if u look at the website it says flamingly "for underpriviliged individuals." Translation being if you are african-american, native american, or mexican ur practically guaranteed in. I had all this experience for the program, but i didnt even get in, none of my friends did and they were overqualified. While i knew a few kids who got in who were ranked like 200 out of my 225 size class only cuz they were mexican and african-american. Good luck, its not worth it if ur doing it for the money, they pay horribly. And u should apply for developed, its easier to get into, they arent racially biased, and its flexible.

WHAT??
that is not cool.... It looked like such a great program to me.
Dang... (I'm well off Asian American male)
My stats are pretty good, but why "for underpriviliged individuals"??? There should be another SHARP for not-so-underpriviliged individuals.
;-P

Hmm, I'm female, but asian. Initially, I didn't even know that they paid so I'm not doing it for the money, although that is pretty cool. NASA SHARP as a whole just sounds like an awesome opportunity/experience.

" "for underpriviliged individuals." Translation being if you are african-american, native american, or mexican ur practically guaranteed in."

Underprivileged is talking about race not wealth. Most CSULA Sharpies family income was beyond 100 k.

SlvrFalcon007 what the hell are are saying, I would say that you are exagerating. there is no way even if your a URM you would get into the program with that type of rank. Sorry you didn't get in but dont be an ass about it. "but i didnt even get in, none of my friends did and they were overqualified" sure lol...

Though URM's have a better chance for getting in it is far from guaranteed.
If your white, Asian, or indian you still have a shot..
Me- white
athlonmj- Asian
