good luck elusive...you dance? what type? i used to do indian traditional dance but i had to stop because of my knees. how long have you been dancing?

Name:Erik Judson
Age: 17
Extracirricular Involvement: Music, Lots and lots of music
GPA: 3.97
I got accepted in residential to Cal State. Looking forward to it.

Who else here is going to Cal State?

wishful_thinker im nervous for the interview! i take bharatanatyam, i also did my arangetram. i love it. what kind of dance did you do? and i'm sorry about your knees, i've been dancing for over 8 years. how long did you dance?

I don't have any extracur. science projects but I like Math and computers. I also play violin for 10 years, speak another language and do some volunteering.

For my interview I aswered all the questions very honestly without thinking if the aswers will get me in the program or not. I was nervous but mostly in the beginning.

hehe I hope I get into the calstate one next year....I get to work at a mit lab this summer, take flying lessons, and will be captain of the academic decathlon team next year...so I suppose those are my science-ish extracurriculars...and I am either 1 or 2 out of 300...woo for geeks!

elusivestranger, don't worry about the interview! just speak from your heart and make sure they hear your enthusiasm. sound like you're talking to a normal person -- it'll show them that you aren't afraid and that you have confidence and that you know how to deal with a situation like this =).

yes i used to do bharatnatyam! i started in 7th grade and then stopped in 10th...and started again that summer and decided to start all the way from the starting. i ended up ready to start my first dance but then my knees had gotten so bad that i couldn't do any of the steps...so yea. i can't wait til they get good enough to start back up again. even if it means starting from the bottom i don't mind, i just love dancing it period. i love the challenges and the beat and the complexity of it all =).

thebluemuffin -- FLYING LESSONS?! that's absolutely awesome.

tambone -- what language. wow 10 years?! i did piano for i think 5 and got bored. i've always wanted to do saxophone though...weird attraction/fascination with it. =)

By "lots of music," I mean jazz ensemble 5 days a week, another jazz band once a week, wind ensemble 5 days a week, and playing piano at a church every sunday. Basically, I have no time to do much else.

ontherock -- which instruments?

Hmm... for some reason I stopped receiving subscription emails, so I thought I killed the thread a couple of pages ago. Oops. So, to whoever asked, no, I didn't interview with Ames, I interviewed with JPL last Thursday.

Just my luck; I suddenly came down with the flu the morning of my interview and I feel like I answered all of the questions "wrong," if that's possible. Well at least I sounded like I had energy and enthusiasm. I hope.

Piano in all the jazz, and percussion in concert band (mostly timpani).

Also during the school year I play clarinet in pep band.

I got my Apprentice Handbook and other stuff today. Boy it's a lot of paperwork.

is that for residential or commuter? like how many papers??

yeah, i got it for residential too. the handbook has like 70ish papers to read through (but its just basic stuff like rules, what to bring, payment schedule, etc.), and there's another packet that has around 20 papers to sign/fill out. yeah, this is going to take awhile...

Residential. sweetmelodies, did you notice that the payment calendar in the manual had the program ending a week later than what the website and everything else said? I hope that's just a big typo. I wonder when we're going to get the specific information from the college about their programs since Cal State seems to have different housing and food situations than most. Also, for anyone still waiting, they don't tell you what research you will be doing. From what I read the mentor will devise what you're doing when you get there I think. Anyone have any more information?

what are ur campuses? im at umichigan but i havent received my packet yet.

DVader327, ooh i didn't notice b/c im at the north carolina site, which has different dates. but that is weird. in fact, they didn't even put the end date for mine on there.

now0520, i think it depends on how far away you live from maryland b/c that's where they sent my packet from.

"Cal State seems to have different housing and food situations than most."

Cal state is not the best college campus but it is the best housing by far. They have apartments not crappy dorms. At Cal State LA you will by food every week at a grocery store. I think we got $140 dollars a week for 4 students and one mentor. $140 dollars is not that much money. The first week will be really tough since you will be buying things that you will need over the entire time, like salt. There fore you will get less food the first week or two. You will find yourself buying big packages of cereal and chicken breast and any steak you get will not be all that great. Theres always Ramen to have quick snacks but that stuff is just bad for you. Regarding lunches you can pack a lunch or buy one with your own money. Spend $3-5 dollars a day ona good lunch because its probably going to be the best meal of the day. Some kids the packed there food ate awful looking sandwichs.

Those who got into CAL State LA should be very happy. Your in the best program, many year standing. You will have the best experience way beyond anyother program. My apartment was the place to be. Make sure your apartment is the cool spot. Go out and each guy should chip in $30 BUCKS TO GET A GOOD TV then after the 8 weeks you guys return the TV and get all your money back. The TV will get like 5 channels but all the main ones, ie FOX, NBC

You will be very active and busy. Dont be the douche that just wants to sleep in and stay in your apartment during the weekend. Mon- Thur you commute to work. Then got to class after work. Fri- GO to seminars and stuff. SAT and SUN- go have fun and travel across the entire area of SOCAL. Plan to spend $300 dollars of your own money if you want to go to movies and have fun while you are out on your weekend trips. During the summer I avg. 6 - 6.5 hrs of sleep( Taking a 40 min nap after work and before class is a good idea), one got only 3-4 each night and a few got aout 8 hrs each night. When you have a TV and people are always over you have more fun and you might lose some sleep over it but its worth it. I can remember that nearly everyone slept a few hrs. at work the first week.

The people last summer made everything very interesting and you always had fun. Some can say they might have had too much fun

Athlonmj has to have stuff to had. The summer will be a blast and you wont even be able to truly let all your friends know how jam packed it was and how much fun you had,.

hey airforce, do you know if other places are going to be like the same? i'm going to NM and i really need to know if there's a kitchen or not..., were we allowed to go out for breakfast/lunch/dinner wherever we wanted or did ppl have to be w/ us?

do you know if there's a choice of whether we go to seminars/traveling? i'm probably going to all of them anyway but what if we don't? what would we do?

just got all my forms..i have to make travel arrangements by tuesday! has anyone already made their arrangements yet?
