Nashville is GORGEOUS. The weather is mild, all four seasons are represented, and the city is really nice. There’s the whole southern charm thing going on down here, so people will wave and say hi to you when you’re walking down the street.

Vanderbilt it a dream, too. Beautiful campus and excellent teachers.

There is not much of a public transportation program, so a car is probably needed for your daughter.

EDIT: and congrats on your D’s acceptance to Vanderbilt grad! That’s such an accomplishment!

We visited Nashville 2 years ago for a week. I loved it and would consider a move there. I have lived in the New England are my entire life, and have always said I had no interest in moving south, but really enjoyed our stay there. The city is clean, affordable, residents were nice, and we found it easy to get around (and find affordable places to park, unheard of in Boston!). My S may be looking at Vandy, but it will be a reach for him.

My middle d graduated from Vanderbilt last May. She, and the rest of us, loved almost everything about it except the oppressive heat and humidity from late April until October. But when you consider what a beautiful city it is, its great attractions (and I’m not even a country music fan), the wonderful restaurants, shops, and homes in the Vanderbilt area, and the graciousness of its residents, what’s a little perspiration? Or even a lot?

We found so much history and culture to explore when we visited - the Hermitage, the Parthenon, the Frisch Museum, the Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park (our favorite), Belle Meade plantation, etc. We had a great afternoon exploring the Opryland Hotel, though we never did see either Ryman Auditorium or the Opry House. And we never got tired of walking around the beautiful Vanderbilt campus.

Vanderbilt itself is in an expensive area, which required some self-discipline on my d’s part, but she managed. For a born and bred Northeasterner, Nashville was refreshing and even a little exotic. The city is a great mixture of contrasts - I’ve been thinking about how soon we can get back there. Congratulations to your daughter on a great acceptance.

My daughter just accepted her offer at Vandy for grad school. I started this thread when she was considering it: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parent-cafe/904227-vanderbilt-grad-school.html?highlight=Vanderbilt+grad

She visited a couple of weeks ago and loved it. I’m looking forward to seeing it when she moves in. Which college will your daughter be attending?

Thanks, Kathie, for linking that for the OP.
Your daughter will love Nashville and Vanderbilt. My D is finishing her 2nd year of grad school at Vandy and she and her husband (a Vandy Dr.- 2nd year resident) love it here. I’ve lived here almost 4 years and it is the best place I have ever lived. It is just beautiful and I am not kidding when I say that every single day I give thanks for how blessed H and I are to have landed here. (I am missing Nordstrom which is coming and still haven’t found Chinese food I really love…)

When y’all hit town, let’s be sure to have a CC meet-up!!!

Another endorsement for Nashville here. One of my D’s classmates is going there in the Fall (ED). Putting it on the list for my S to visit when it’s time (he’s only a HS freshman).

Manageable city. Seems affordable (compared to NY!). I haven’t seen the school, but you asked about the city and my family liked it!

Thanks for the link. Daughter will be doing materials engineering at Vanderbilt.

I sent crabbylady a private message, but I will supplement it now that I know her daughter is headed for VUSE. From the perspective of a parent of an undergraduate, I cannot overemphasize how impressed I have been with the administration of the engineering school. The various deans are incredibly supportive of engineering students. The school is small enough that students would have to work at getting lost in the crowd, especially given the genuinely caring approach of the administration and faculty, yet there seems to be a lot of research activity going on.

I predict your daughter will be very happy with Vanderbilt in general, VUSE in particular, and being in Nashville will be icing on the cake.

kathiep, glad to hear your daughter accepted her grad. school offer.

D loves Nashville, we love Nashville. Lots of great things about it!

“Bad” things: Traffic (probably not bad to many of you, but our area’s traffic isn’t that bad). Allergy sufferers may have to figure out meds to manage their condition - it’s tough on some allergy sufferers. Heat/humidity (probably not an issue if you’re from the south already). Lots of bad hair days (not a problem for guys probably - but girls might want to have hair long enough to pull back or short enough that it’s humidity-proof).

Far more good than bad!

I’m a NJ native & we relocated to Nashville 7 years ago. Best thing we’ve ever done. Easy town to navigate & take advantage of cultural opportunities, friendly people, lower cost of living, higher quality of life, happy employees at the airport great BBQ. Beautiful vistas, unexpected celebrity sightings.

The only think I’ll still kvetch about is the lack of certain ethnic foods but there has been a great improvement since we’ve moved here. The area is a magnet for relocating companies so as more people move here, different types of restaurants have popped up.

Nordstrom’s is opening in Fall 2011…now if we can only get an Ikea ;)

Just stumbled across this thread. Welcome back crabbylady!! Have been thinking about you a lot. Hope you and your family are ok.

I don’t know anything about Nashville, but I love this movie
[Something the Lord Made -about a partnership that started at Vanderbilt.](Something the Lord Made - Wikipedia)

I added the movie to my netflix queue but we may watch it instantly. Any other suggestions about movies set in or about Nashville? It occurred to me that it might be fun to spend a few nights with daughter watching movies about her new city.

Well, the first one that occurs to me is Robert Altman’s “Nashville” - which I haven’t seen since d2 entered Vanderbilt (and will probably watch today, now that I think of it!:)). It’s a great film, but not at all representative of the Nashville we discovered while d was in school. I don’t think that a factual representation of the city was what Altman had in mind - he was commenting on American life in the mid-70s, using Nashville as a microcosm. Not a very flattering movie (and the Parthenon looks much, much better today), but a must-see if you love Altman films.

Great cast, too, who wrote their own songs - Keith Carradine won an Oscar for his!

Don’t you just love the Internet? I was poking around, looking for more recent films set in Nashville, and found this article about this year’s Nashville film festival: [Nashville Film Festival 2010: Dispatch Two | The House Next Door](Nashville Film Festival 2010: Black, White and Blues, The Colonel’s Bride, Hipsters, & More - Slant Magazine)

I’d never heard of Black, White and Blues before, but it sounds terrific - set in Nashville about a struggling musician, directed by Mario Van Peebles and starring Michael Clarke Duncan (so glad to see him get a great role). And Southern Belle sounds interesting, too - a documentary about a camp for Civil War re-enactors. That one was done by Nashville public TV and might be available online?

kathiep, I envy you folks getting to discover Nashville!

We visited Nashville for the first time last April and spent an evening at the Bluebird Cafe. At one point my H nudged me to watch the table next to us where a young man was in the process of proposing, ring and all. We later found out they were from California and had never been to Nashville before, but he chose to propose at the Bluebird because his girlfriend’s favorite movie, *The Thing Called Love/i was set there. Very sweet :)

frazzled, I’m hoping we just get to visit Nashville. Since this is grad school, we really haven’t had anything to do with the search. I’m kinda hoping that she needs help with moving!
