Nashville

D2 was just accepted to the graduate program at Vanderbilt. I know NOTHING about Vanderbilt or Nashville.

What do you like?

What do you dislike?

Thanks

Check out the “I hate Vandy because” thread. It has 30 replies and lists reasons people like and dislike Vanderbilt.

Don’t bother to look at undergrad like/hate threads for a grad student. Hopefully, there are some grad students who will chime in about what they like. UG & grad are just so different

I think MomofWildChild lives in Nashville, and has a daughter doing grad school at Vandy. You should contact her.

EDIT: Oops, I just saw that she already replied to your thread cross-posted on the Parents Forum.

In my opinion, Nashville is what brings Vanderbilt a step above many of its peer institutions. Not sure I can say much about the graduate programs there, but I think they’re all pretty high-quality.

As someone else suggested, I would look at other similar threads for specific likes/dislikes.

I am a current Vandy grad student (engineering). Having lived in bigger cities (Dallas, Houston) in the past, I think Nashville is a small town. That said…

Likes:
-Cost of living is inexpensive compared to other cities
-Great nightlife within walking distance of campus (Hillsboro Village, Division St) and beyond (East Nashville, Braodway)
-Lots of greenery, and with great weather to go with it (Great for any outdoorsy person)
-Lots of good weekend roadtrip options (Atlanta, Birmingham, Louisville, Chicago, etc)
-Laid back, friendly population
-Traffic is not terrible for commuters, esp if you live in West Nashville

Dislikes:
-This is the most undiverse city I’ve ever lived in. Vanderbilt’s the most diverse place in the entire city.
-While we do have relatively diverse food options (ethnically), would like to see more
-Lots of places are closed earlier in the day (this includes on-campus core labs)
-Winters are cold (I’m a Texas boy, and winters should really be in the 40s)
-Springtime allergies can be bad (it’s esp bad this year)
-Not as much grad/undergrad interaction as I’ve seen in other universities

Resurfacing after a 2-year hiatus from CC to ask about grad student housing at Vandy. Son starts in August, and we have never been to N-ville!

When do the rentals become available? Now or in Augsut? He’s looking for a single, close to campus if possible, with great Internet access. Comments? Suggestions?

D just finished her junior year. We live about 3 hours away and have visited campus 3 -4 times a year - move in/move out; parents’ weekend; sporting events; even ran the Nashville Half-Marathon the past two years. Lots to do in Nashville. The area around campus is nice and has a lot of restaurants. Hotels near campus can be a little pricy, but The Guesthouse Inn (listed on Vandy website) is just a couple blocks off campus and is around $100. Downtown is fun if you are up for music and crazy nightlife. D likes the shopping malls. I know after she graduates we will continue to visit Nashville. It’s a great city.

Reasonabledad, there are postings on Vandy’s housing website, and Craigslist is also helpful. August postings are starting to show up now, but should be popping up throughout the summer. D is subletting for the summer with law students (she is an undergrad), and they are not actually from Vandy. She just answered an ad for fall (she got an off campus pass) for a house to share, and it looks like it’s Belmont students who are posting. It’s a young city with lots of college kids/young professionals. He should be able to find something if he starts looking now & just keeps his eyes open.

I’ve posted before about Village at Vanderbilt, where my d had an excellent living arrangement senior year. It’s expensive - $1700 monthly for a 2-bed, 2-bath apartment. However, we felt it was worth it: parking was included; it’s immediately adjacent to campus (just up the street from the hospital complex); it’s a safe area; there was a decent kitchen and so she did all her meals there during her last semester. It’s a 12-month lease, though, and the management company is difficult about subletting - something to consider.

Thank you all for your comments and messages. It has been very helpful.

I am an undergrad, but I have ventured out beyond the Vander-bubble alot and have many friends who live in the city.

Likes:
-definitely agree, GREAT nightlife. lots of options for every personality from dance clubs to chill bars, etc.
-actually very diverse. There is a huge hispanic population in the area with areas like Nolensville Pike boasting deliciously authentic food and culture-filled outings.
-lots of concerts/artists come through, not just country
-beautiful and very green, especially since Vandy is an arboretum (not so great if you have allergies though)

Dislikes:
-last year’s flood, but I don’t think thats too common of an occurence.

I am in LOVE with the city.
