ok, i have been accepted into USNA's summer seminar program. The problem is that it conflicts with another program called Governor's School (a TN program where college courses are taken by outstanding high school juniors in June). I want to attend USNA following high school very badly but my parents recommend I attend GS because if I do not get into the Academy as a plebe then Governor's School will help more with local colleges (Univ of Tennessee). So basically, i guess i am wondering whether or not attending NASS with help enormously or is being selected to attend enough and will NASS help with my actual appointment into the academy?

I didn't attend NASS, and I really regret it, now that I will be going to USNA next year. NASS will just give you invaluable experience that will help you make the decision to attend USNA or not.

I vote Gov School. That's a really big deal. NASS is great, but not critical or essential to admission.

Can you possibly change your date for NASS to enable both?

sadly no whistlepig, i asked the director of gov school and he said missing 4 days would be too much(i would miss 4 days of GS for all of the seminars). Its a really tough decision b/c i know with me wanting to attend the academy that NASS will help enormously but if i dont get into USNA then GS will help alot for getting local scholarships.

go with watever ur heart wants... ;)

do you think you are a strong enough candidate to get in without the nass? without gs?

also, i loved nass. best week ever. but i imagine that gs would be pretty sweet.

good luck, let us know what you choose.

navy clarinet, do you think that nass helps tremendously with the real admissions process? i guess what im trying to ask is how important is NASS?

it looks good. but it's not essential. how much do you know about usna? how much do you want to go there?
i wanted to go there, but i was a little shaky and didn't know to much. after nass, i knew that usna was the place.

like i said, it's not essential, but it's a really good program.

i know alot i guess. my brother applied 2 years ago and so i pretty much know all there is to know about the application process. i guess i want to go really bad, its my #1 college. Thanks everyone, I think NASS is a great program but GSIS will help me more and will still look great on my application anywhere i go unlike NASS which will only appeal to USNA.

That is a really hard one. I went to Kentucky's Governors Scholars Program, and Summer Seminar and both were some of the best experiences of my life. Both teach you lessons that will be valuable in whatever you do later. The best advice I can give you is to try to talk to anyone you know that has been to TN's program, and to people who have been to NASS. If you are a praying person, I would also highly reccommend that too.

yea, its a tough decision and it might take me a couple of days to decide. I will need to pray and think about what is best for me.

The fact that you applied for NASS and were selected is "enough" in it's own right.... if you are unable to attend because of another opportunity, that is fine...just be able to explain that should you be asked (you may not be, but you never know...most BGO's will ask you if you "applied" or "attended" NASS at your interview).....

either way, you will be ok....
the one advantage NASS offers is the chance to experience the USNA up-close-and-personal in order to help you decide if this is for you....

having said that, remember that not all NASS attendees will end up with appointments, just as many who gain admission will have done so without having attended NASS.

Also - by not going to NASS you are ging to something else that is impressive in its own right. It isn't like you decided to go on vacation with a friend or something. You can just indicate you were regreatbly unable to attend because you were selected to particiapte in the other thing. They'll understand and you will still have a neat thing to put on your resume.

Don't sweat this. Go to Gov.School. No one at USNA will care that you could not attend NASS. It's really just a marketing tool. Why do you think the Mids call it "Summer Scaminar"

Go to CVW if you get a chance. You will learn a lot more in that short weekend than four days in the summer with no "real" Mids around. Remember, they choose Plebes no more to do NASS, so you only get to be around those "they" want you to be. I saw much more of the real deal at CVW.

thanks guys
