<p>Hi, I just came from NMSC's website, but I still have some questions about the National Achievement Scholarship Program. The website says that 3,000 of the 4,600 students will be referred to colleges in late September; however, it does not state when the 1,600 upper students will be notified of their semifinalist status. Since my score qualifies for NMSF (CA), I am reasonably sure that I will be among these 1,600. The last time I asked my counselor about National Achievement, way back last year right when I got my scores, she said she didn't really know much about it at all. Is there a way that my school can drop the ball on this?</p>
<p>For National Hispanic Scholar, the school gets a letter and then the counseler has to verify your ethnic status. Then you get a packet to fill out and send back in to NHS. I would bet that NAS is similar.</p>

It’s for the 2008 competition (took the PSAT in 2006). That should give you an idea of the timeframe. Info for the 2009 competition (took the PSAT in 2007) will be posted in September they say. I’m not sure if you can get money from national merit and national achievement, so you may want to check that out.</p>
<p>I’m in the same situation- and you can be an “honorary” scholar in both competitions, but you can’t get more than $2500.</p>
<p>The 2009 NMSC Achievement Semi-Finalist should be notified by their school the first half of September 2008. The 3000 Referred scholars will be notified towards the end of September 2008.</p>
<p>If you feel you are not getting the help or needed information from your school, do not hesitate to call the NMSC and ask for the Acheivement department. They may not be able to confirm semi-finalist status until the notifications have officially gone out, but at least you can call and ask them. They were very helpful for us last Spring, but made it clear they could only verify that my D was at least going to be recognized. I tried calling over the summer and they said they could not release any additional information until the notifications went out in September.</p>

so you can either call the department or talk to your school and should be able to find out this week or early next!</p>

<p>Thank you for the update. I left another thread on a different post stating that I think we will call too. I am positive our school would hold off announcing this until this Friday’s assembly, so I am too ansy to wait.</p>
<p>We are at least referred per NMSC statements. Our school has indicated the possibility of semi but D’s index score was right on the edge, so not sure until we receive notice.</p>

<p>OK, I got antsy, so I called the National Merit People and they said that I made Semifinalist in both Merit and Achievement, so now I can finally stop worrying. Thanks again for the help, everyone!</p>

<p>This site is great! The notifications were mailed on Friday. I contacted my son’s counselor they were received today. She suggested that kids contact their schools directly and give them a reminder to “look out,” for them. </p>

<p>Congrats everybody! I wish I could get my packet now so I can start on it, but my counselor said they want to do all NMSC stuff at the same time, and they’re still tied up with schedule changes at this point :(</p>
<p>um, along with the letter/application materials I got a booklet which contains all the names of the semifinalist…am I suppose to have this?</p>
