National AP Scholar Award Clarification

I got five 5's, three 4's and one 3 on my AP exams. I am already an AP Scholar with Distinction.

Here is the definition of National AP Scholar: "National AP Scholar: Granted to students in the United States who receive an average score of at least 4 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams."

Here is a clarifying remark: "The student's average AP score is determined based on all exams taken this year and in previous years." I have an average higher than 4 for each year I took AP's. Average of 5 Senior year. Average of 4.4 Junior Year. Average of 4.5 Sophmore year.

Did my score of 3 take me out of the running for it or should I be notified of being a National AP Scholar later in the year? The 3 was on Physics C Mechanics. Please let me know! I am rather confused. Thanks :)

You’ve taken 9 AP exams with an average of 4.4 and scored 4+ on 8 of those. In my interpretation, you’ve met the criteria. Good job!

Thanks! Any idea when I should be notified of it?

Pretty soon.

September.

Can I claim it yet since I meet all the requirements (and mark it as tentative since I haven’t got it yet)? I assume I should just wait. Also, what is the prestige of the award and any idea how many receive it each year?

Are you sending in any college apps before September? If not, just wait.

In 2012, 2.1M students sat for at least one AP exam, and 19,853 National AP Scholars were awarded.

@‌ivymatt @‌skieurope

The 19,853 number is misleading. Since you are a rising senior (?), you should be looking at the National AP Scholars who obtained it as a junior. Last year, around 3,000 underclassmen received the award; which is a much more exclusive group.

This means that admission officers will know that there are only around 3,000 (a really small percentage) of us that have the award on hand in time for applications.

Edit: Actually you are a senior, so disregard this if you want haha

I understand. A large portion of my classes were college classes, not AP, in high school making me get the award this year. @jchen97‌ It’s just for a resume at this point. I’ll leave it out until the official notification. Not too big of a deal I guess. @skieurope‌ Thanks!
