National Buckeye Scholarship

***So I know there is many other posts about the National Buckeye Scholarship but most of them are a quite a few years old and therefore I question how applicable they are now.

I was wondering who got the National Buckeye Scholarship last year?

The Ohio State website says that the criteria is:

Ohio State is committed to enrolling a diverse and talented student population. The National Buckeye Scholarship is awarded on a competitive basis to non-Ohio students required to pay the out-of-state surcharge who are admitted to the Columbus campus for autumn semester. Those considered rank in the top 40 percent of their graduating classes and have ACT composite scores of 28 or higher or combined SAT Critical Reading and Math scores of 1260 or higher.

My main question is, is that 28+ and top 40% just a very low standard that you actually need a 32+ and top 10% or do they really give it to most qualified students?

I have a 30 ACT and ranked in the 11th percentile and if I get this scholarship I will most likely go to OSU but I want to know how likely it is!

Thanks!

From reading old posts it sounds to me like most people who meet the criteria almost automatically receive the money. That said, it seems like the competition is getting stiffer each year, so that may change. We are out of state and hoping for the scholarship.

OSU likes to admit OOS students because they have to shell out the extra dollars. Even with the National Buckeye Scholarship you’re still paying way more than anyone in state. Lol. That’s why it’s so easy to get.

I too was wondering if it is automatic if you meet the criteria. Looking at the engineering school and the scholarship would put this at the top of my list. With merit scholarships, and it looks like I could get another $2,000 if would be almost the same cost as in-state.

My son received the National Buckeye last year. 31 ACT. Contrary to opinions above the scholarship made OSU almost $7,000 less per year than our state flagship UIUC. Also, made the decision easier between Purdue and tOSU. Nice scholarship.

I know they give out the scholarship for out of state who meet the criteria. Even the minimum of 28 ACT and SAT of 1260. My question which I stated earlier, is if I have a 1250 SAT AND A 27 ACT and a 93 gpa unweighted, will I still get in. I am taking the SAT again to hopefully get the 10 extra points for the scholarship. I want to do early action. I spoke to them and they said even if I get accepted I can give them my new test scores. I am just nervous about being deferred. Do you think I will get in?

I’m in the exact same situation. Someone please answer

Me too. Bump

Here is my post from August 2013:

Yes it’s true! We are from MA and our 3rd son is a freshman at OSU this year (all 3 boys went/go there). It’s called the National Buckeye Scholarship:

National Buckeye Scholarship for non-Ohio residents
Award amount
$12,000 ($48,000 four–year value)

Criteria
Ohio State is committed to enrolling a diverse and talented student population. The National Buckeye Scholarship is awarded on a competitive basis to non-Ohio students required to pay the out-of-state surcharge who are admitted to the Columbus campus for autumn semester. Those considered rank in the top 40 percent of their graduating classes and have ACT composite scores of 28 or higher or combined SAT Critical Reading and Math scores of 1260 or higher.

Notes:
Except where noted, the National Buckeye Scholarship can be combined with any other merit scholarships, as long as the combined total does not exceed the total cost of an Ohio State education.
This award is renewable for a maximum of eight semesters (or the equivalent) of full-time undergraduate enrollment, provided the recipient maintains a 2.5 or higher GPA (earned by no later than the end of the first year) and is required to pay the out-of-state surcharge.

As long as you have the SAT or ACT score mentioned above AND apply early (Nov 1) you get this merit award. Son was also given the Trustees Scholarship, which was another $2000 per year. He (actually we) end up paying about $800 more per semester than in-state students!

My oldest and youngest both received both of these scholarships; unfortunately my middle son isn’t strong in standardized tests and missed the SAT requirement by 40 points (yet he graduated #6 in his class!), so we pay the full OOS tuition for him. And it really hurts!

You must meet both criteria: top 40% of graduating class AND 28 ACT or 1260 SAT. It’s also important to apply by the priority deadline which is Nov. 1.

Bearvet, do the students find out about the National Buckeye Scholarship and Trustees Scholarship with the OSU acceptance letter? Or do the scholarship letters come later? ( How much later?) My D just applied as a non resident so the scholarships would be nice.

The OSU Acceptance notification was around Nov 13 last year - Scholarship info wasn’t received until February. Unless something drastically changes, OOS students who meet the criteria receive the scholarships. Looks like some students received their notifications in December - here’s a link to last year’s discussion http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/ohio-state-university-columbus/1416746-scholarships.html

It was a long wait…

An OSU rep came to visit my school and said that as long as you meet the National Buckeye Scholarship requirements as an out of state student, you are awarded the scholarship. This scholarship can also be combined with any other one you qualify for, except of course if you get one of those really competitive full-tuition scholarships.

The National Buckeye Scholarship is really great for me, because it makes going out of state cheaper than going instate to University of Illinois.

They come separately. I had a 30 act, barely top 20% and got both national buckeye and trustees. I don’t know of anybody out of state that didn’t get at least the national buckeye one.

Does the Nov 1 deadline mean that the qualifying SAT/ACT also has to be received by Nov. 1.? DD2 applied before the deadline but was short on the SAT score by 10 points. Just got her ACT score and it meets the minimum requirements but OSU didn’t receive until after Nov 1.

It shouldn’t be a problem. I didn’t take my act until december and submitted my application well before that.

I toured today and they said everyone who applied last year from oos got it

That sounds like a line. I mean, really? EVERYONE from last year who applied got a scholarship? Yeah right. Consider the source. Those tour guides are full of you-know-what.

If you look on other forums everyone who met that criteria got it… So I’ll believe it

On OSU’s website it says if you receive this scholarship the amount it equals to is $12,000 worth of tuition. That seems like alot to just be handing out to everyone that applies because everyone who applies receives it right?

In our experience - YES, every out of state student who applies to OSU and MEETS THE CRITERIA received the National Buckeye scholarship. It is $12,000/year for 4 years for a total of $48,000!! It also brings the cost of attending lower than our state flagship (UMass) including scholarships received there.
