if i am won nationals one year in my figure skating event, and received two other national medals, is this considered a hook???

I'd definitely say so. I mean, not alot of applicants can say they were a national champ at something, especially ice skating.
Are you a rising hs senior?

Winning the USFSA nationals certainly would, if your talking about the senior circuit. That would also get you a bid to the Olympics in the right year. If you're a junior skater or below, I'm not so sure. Junior winners don't get the press. It certainly shows dedication to an EC.

It is definitely a hook no matter what level it was at and I believe that colleges will look favorably on the dedication and work it takes to be a champion ice skater. However, unless you are at the Sarah Hughes level, you will need to have the academic credentials to go along with a very strong extracurricular activity.

I was national champ at something and it didn't stop me from getting deferred ED (I had the stats), but ultimately accepted RD.

sixsixty:
what were you national champ at if you wouldn't mind telling us?

hey,
i'm a figure skater, too! where are you from?
being at the top in the country at any sport/activity will abosultely boost your chances at getting into a top college. Dartmouth even runs ads in Skating magazine, trying to get skaters to apply.

anything on the national level like that definitely warrants considerable merit

its junior level

but, still quite an accomplishment

Definitely a great EC.

I did it in Canada in Reach for the Top, a nationally televized Trivia Competition. Would schools even care?

IcicleRose,
DEFINITELY.
Anyone who has not been living under a rock for maybe 80 yrs. knows not just how much work/accomplishment that takes, but how many hours & sacrifice that takes to get there. The off-campus commitment is something that adcoms tend to like to see. One has to be really committed to get up before dawn so often & get your body in gear.
Congratulations, btw.

Icicle Rose - I'm a skater too, although not nearly as accomplished. I sent my colleges information about my skating, including a very short DVD (5 minutes of 4 jumps, 2 combination spins, and my short program). I would suggest you do the same. It may not help a lot, but if the colleges allow DVDs to be sent, it can't hurt. Also, if you are applying to colleges with skating clubs that compete in collegiate competition, make sure you mention in your video that you would like to be a part of that club and compete on behalf of the college.

Congratulations on your accomplishments - I know how much work it takes to get there!
