National College Match - 2009-2010

Can someone answer my question please :(? I understand that if you are selected as a finalist, the schools require you to submit to them a CSS Profile, test score report, and transcript. If we do not get matched but still want to apply to those schools through RD, do we need to submit those forms over again because it would cost a lot of money to do so. I am confused on whether or not we would have to re-submit those forms because the link below shows that some school wants those forms for RD. Would they just use the ones we submitted for match round or would we have to submit again is what I am trying to ask. Thanks :)!

@powerbomb: It doesn’t matter if colleges get 3 letters from you. My sister sent an extra rec from our school’s stage crew director to BU, and she’s now going there on a full scholarship and is getting trained by one of the best stage companies in the nation. If debate is your thing, then colleges should have that letter.

stevenboi27, once a school has a document, whether an app, FA doc, transcript, or whatever, it is put in your file, and will remain there. So no, you will not have to submit anything more than once to any given school.

@powerbomb: Definitely agree with Ju_liaa, unless the college explicity says to not send in a third rec, it shouldn’t hurt and can only help. I forgot to ask you: is debate a big thing for you? If so, that rec is an important element.

I know this may seem a dumb thing to ask, but if I start now do I have time to finish? I think I can do the essays quickly, but how long in advance do I need to ask my teachers for recommendations? And does sending out transcripts take a long time?

No, it is not too late. Sign up for the Match. Go to your GC, ask her/him for a transcript/school profile, and a rec. Then go to your 2 favorite core teachers that love you and ask them, tell them how much this would mean to you. You could also send the QB link to the GC and the teachers so they “get” the program.

Sit down and write your essay’s.They are extensive, but doable. I’m sure you have read alot of the posts here about people writing them and editing for weeks and months, but from my D’s experience, she always put out her best stuff first time out. She did all her QB essay’s in a weekend, and was a match recipient. I have said several times on this thread, don’t overthink things. Write what is you, what makes you tick, what makes you a person that X school might want to admit. Are you quirky, smart, geeky, cheerleader yet mu alpha theta, tuba player in the marching band or QB of the football team? Tell them about you, not what you think a school wants to hear about your intellect. Everybody that is applying has that! Show them something else.

Sorry to ramble. :)

Okay thanks so much and you’re not rambling at all! I was really worried when I read that people were counting down to start as soon as the application was released. Luckily, I have a meeting with my GC Monday so I can explain the whole questbridge thing then. I already wrote a biosketch because my lit teacher wanted us to get is ready for college essays, so I can edit it for the biographical sketch. Yeah I get what you’re saying about overthinking, I spent way too much time on the short answer, but it is really hard to be unique in 30 words or less.

Not so hard, when they ask about music, don’t list things.

Say something (that will fit you) like " I love a great broadway tune, but in the same time would love to let go at a BeeGee’s concert!"

Don’t list, let them know your taste, or your quirkyness, or whatever. Does that make sense?

Edit: obviously, sorry about the old references. Use currrent groups or people, or maybe not if that is you!

my personal statement is 1150 words long!!! is that a bit too long?? should i cut a lot?
However, i seriously this is my greatest work ever and i cannot even think of what to cut. will they get annoyed with my essay or think that i dont know how to follow directions?

Isn’t the limit something like 800 words? If so, that’s almost 50% more than requested. Definitely too long.

^^ Didn’t the QB on-line app. ‘cut you off’ @ 800 words??
How did you put in 1150 words??
I agree - too long!

oh they cut u off after 800??? i just wrote it on wordpad right now.

i need help tho…this is like the greatest thing i have ever written and cutting it by 300 words is (i think) impossible without making it worse.

Here’s a website (I found on the Parents thread) that ‘counts’ your words…and even counts your ‘characters’

[Free Online Word Count Tool and Online Character Count Calculator](Free Online Word Count Tool and Online Character Count Calculator)

I found it a big help when writing/shortening my essays.

Good Luck

Sorry for coming back to my question… so, it’s okay to have different recommendations for the questbridge app and the common app, correct? and yes, Debate is a big thing for me and my debate coach knows me very well, so I feel like I could get a good rec out of her.

Okay, so, I’m pretty late in the game. I wasn’t going to use Questbridge at all. However, I’ve been talking to a woman that used to work at Stanford and who now works for Quest. She says I’m a shoe-in for finalist and that even if I don’t get matched, it’s handy to be a Quest scholar. I can probably get the essays done (but I’m worried about quality so late in the game… will anyone look over them for me?), and I should be able to get the school forms in (no guarantees but I can find out tomorrow). My problem is that I go to a distance learning high school. I don’t have any special standing with my teachers, so I’m not sure how to go about asking them for a recommendation in such a short period of time. Yesterday I submitted my resume, a little bit about my college choices, and a little bit about what I did in their classes. But the September 30th deadline gives them barely two weeks. How should I go about requesting that they put their recommendations in so soon? Should I try to call them or will an email suffice?

So I take it that becoming a finalist is not that hard?

I’ll ask my question again in case it goes unanswered :

I would first e-mail them, link them to QB, and TELL them what a once in a lifetime opportunity this is and how much you appreciate them, even though you have given them short notice. Leave your phone # and tell them to please call you if they need any additional information on you for their rec.

I think I mentioned this a very long time ago, but it can’t hurt for any of you to subtly “mention” to your rec teachers that if you are chosen as a “Match” recipient, that they receive a HUGE engraved plaque (I think it is about 12" x 24") with their name on it from QB thanking them for being your rec! I know both teachers that got them because of my D have them proudly hung in their rooms at school.

Lastly, to all QB applicants, don’t forget a thank-you note to your rec teachers. A small gesture goes a long way. A small personal gift is also nice, doesn’t have to be expensive, just personal. One of D’s teachers LOVED Swedish fish, so she gave him a huge bag of them. The other liked a certain Starbucks drink, and she brought one in for him one morning along with a $10 Starbucks gift card.

I’m applying for CollegeMatch, and I participated in CollegePrep last spring (I received a Conference invite, which fewer than 25 percent of applicants received). However, I’m going to apply to Yale early action, and my background is not classic QuestBridge material – I have some very educated people in my family (my sister went to Yale in the 90s), although I’ve grown up in the Ozarks in a family whose finances have always been strapped, to put it mildly (think outhouse, no hot running water). I’m worrying that if I put myself in context of of other QuestBridge applicants when I apply to Yale, I may actually be hurting myself. My sister thinks I should apply to Yale without my QuestBridge application, regardless of whether I become a finalist or not, and trust that my interesting background will bleed through in essays naturally. Any thoughts on this?

powerbomb, approx 50% of applicants become finalists.

I think you need to ask QB your question.
