So I have just been invited by collegeboard to apply for a national hispanic recognition program. All I want to know is, what does it take to qualify as a finalist? I’ve already checked collegeboard’s website, but it only states the invitation requirements (which I satisfy).
Thank you in advance
I believe your school then has to verify that you have a 3.5 GPA or above and that you are in good standing. Most of those that are notified 9as you were) do get the award.
student4976, how were you notified? did you receive an email, letter. etc???
As said above 3.5 gpa, counselor signs the recommendation form and college counselor has to affirm you are 25% hispanic.
@southern5062 Similar to NMSF, there is a cut off index but instead of by state, it is by region. If you believe you qualify and were overlooked (ex. you didn’t indicate you were hispanic when you completed the profile information for the PSAT) you can self-nominate.

Thanks, paveyourpath. I did call them and I did make the NHRP cutoff and was already on their list. For some reason I never received a letter or email but she had my name on their list so I won’t have to self nominate. She did say the advantage to being on their official list (signed as Hispanic when you took the test, and made the cutoff score) is that is the list they send to all of the universities.
The GC at our daughter’s school told her about the NHRP, but then added, “There is no money associated with the recognition”.
My daughter took the statement at face value, that NHRP was not going to cut a check. What she didn’t know, and what the GC did not tell us, was schools around the country will offer big merit money to National Hispanic Scholars.
We found out here at CC! This has made all the difference in the world for us.
Yes, NHRP holds roughly the same weight of being a National Merit Semifinalist, which is pretty good
I just submitted my info as I received an email as well! Congrats to everyone. I didn’t know it held the same weight as NMS!
@geekfromsb
Congrats. Yep I believe a few state schools even give good amounts of money (half or full tuition) automatically from being NHRP
“The 2017 National Hispanic Recognition Program minimum score for the State Of Florida is 1360.”
@AimingTop50
Some even full rides, like U Kentucky and U New Mexico for example.
But I never hear of anyone taking advantage of these.
@nw2this
Our D is at UKy on the Patterson Scholarship, automatic full ride for National Hispanic.
@Midwest67
Aha, I’d seen your UKY posts before, but I thought you were NMF.
Hi @nw2this Question about UKY is it tuition, room and board +? …
@Meddy Yes, it is. You do have to maintain a certain GPA. @Midwest67 can probably tell you more about it.
@Meddy @nw2this
The Patterson for the incoming class for Fall 2016 covers tuition, room and board. As far as I know, there have been no changes to the scholarship award for Fall 2017.
The amount of the stipend for room and board is for the equivalent of a double room in the Honors dorm and a basic meal plan.
If you upgrade to a more expensive suite, you pay the difference. Ditto with upgrading a meal plan. I think it will cost $500 more per semester next year for our D to be in a suite with a small kitchenette and 2 private bedrooms with full beds.
If you move off-campus in subsequent years, you will still receive the room and board stipend into your student account and it can be used for your off-campus living expenses.
We did have to pay some misc. fees the first semester, no more than $300. And, we bought the UK student health plan since our insurance policy based at home doesn’t work in Lexington. That was about $2200? for the year.
The Patterson covers classes taken during the regular school year and is not applicable to classes taken during the winter intersession or summer.
The GPA requirement was changed from 3.3 to 3.0
But, please call the Office of FA & Scholarships to confirm updated information over taking my word for it.

@Meddy
Adding: There is a tax liability for the room and board portion of the scholarship.
Thanks for all of the info @Midwest67
