Our children were NHRP honorees.
Yes, there are schools that give aid to NHRP winners.
What we didn’t know was that it is also income/need based. So, they all got nice certificates because our income was “too high”.
Only certain schools provide financial aid to NHRP awardees.
To clarify, the Patterson at UKy has no income-based component. It is automatically awarded to NMFs or NHRP Finalists. Can’t speak to other schools requirements.

My D will be at UKy in the fall on the Patterson through NHRP. I would recommend anyone who qualifies to seriously consider it. She was also accepted in TAMU for engineering but the non-merit aid offered was paltry compared to the Patterson scholarship. Although not as recognized as TAMU, we felt UKy, in addition to the superior aid package, was a more comfortable size and offered more one on one attention compared to the oversized engineering school at TAMU. Plus, Lexington is a gorgeous city. She is looking forward to the fall!
Our D is finishing up her first year at UK. Being away from home took some adjustment, but she has hit her stride second semester. So many opportunities are presenting themselves. We feel very fortunate.
I hope your D loves it. Congrats!
Go Cats!
@“aunt bea”
Which schools were those?
Oklahoma and Nebraska were two I can remember off the top of my head @nw2this.
Thanks @Student4976 for bringing up the NHRP question :-bd
Junior year behind us and let the college visits begin! Visiting the NHRP scholarship schools: ASU and UNM and would love to see how to get in a visit to UK. Did you visit prior to making the decision? @Midwest67 & @FriscoTXDad ? What has the culture, community experience been like?
We made two visits to UK, but only after confirming the Patterson would be automatic for our D’s incoming class. I think the info was posted on the UK web site in July (?), just before application season opened.
We made a visit in the fall of senior year, and then another in the spring for Merit Weekend.
We are in the Chicago area, so the drive is not so bad.
UK & Lexington has a lot to offer.
Thanks for the info @Midwest67. We will keep our eyes on their website for the info.
Hello all. My son will also be named in the NHRP We visited UK and he really liked it (was terribly difficult since we’re lifelong IU fans). Planning to road trip to UCF, UAH, UAB, and MSU next week. Should be fun
@AnotherNHRPMom So glad your visit was positive. Can you elaborate about the UK tour and any specific info about NHRP scholars mentioned for the coming year?
Someone posted on another thread that updated scholarship for UK should be posted after the first of August.
Thanks @Midwest67 for the detailed info!
@Meddy,
The UK tour was good. The dorms are all suites, with everyone getting their own private room (with a few folks sharing a bathroom). Most buildings looked new. Campus is walkable. They said scholarships for 2018 would be updated this summer. The 2017 NHRP offering is at http://www.uky.edu/financialaid/scholarship-incoming-freshmen
@AnotherNHRPMom I think that dorm situation sounds nice. Did you see students around campus? I have to say that I noticed within the first ten minutes of being on ASU’s campus mixed groups of students/friends that looked to be Asian, African American, Hispanic and Caucasian milling about. The diversity is something my D is hoping for.
