National Hispanic Scholar vs. National Merit Scholar

I have been very unclear with the difference between the two (besides the difference of how to get them since Hispanic Scholar requires a lower SAT and difference of race of course). Does anyone know how the two are considered for colleges? I know a lot of schools award for National Merit Finalists and Semi Finalists; but for Hispanic scholars, all I know is that Fordham awards for it.

Is National Hispanic Scholar even important even more because so many people can get it with a lower SAT requirement? Is it even competitive to put on your app?

Thanks! I’m just curious.

Definitely put it on your app.

(Be careful to distinguish between the National Hispanic Recognition Program, to which your post refers, and the Hispanic Scholarship Fund, a private need-based program.)

Hopefully, NHRP cutoffs will be available starting tomorrow. They are not published, though one can email or call to find out the cutoff for your region. I’m not sure when emails are sent out, but they would go to your College Board email address.

Past discussions about colleges that might offer scholarships to NHRP recipients can be found in the Hispanic student forum http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/hispanic-students/. Check out the last few years of discussion threads:

Thank you so much!

Just an aside, Hispanic is an ethnicity, not a race. There are white Hispanics, Asian Hispanics, black Hispanics, indigenous Hispanics, and any combination among those.

My bad. I am aware, and didn’t mean to offend

I just called the office that handles NHRP . I was told that PSAT qualifying score indexes for each region will be determined in March for the class of 2021. NOT in February as the previous post mentioned. We just have to wait a couple of weeks. ?

@Texashorses I wonder if that may be a reflection of the chatter around the harsh scaling on that PSAT that I have been reading around here.

I guess I forgot to state it, but I already am a National Hispanic Scholar and my year’s (2019) qualifier was like 1300+. I am grateful to be apart of it, but I always have just felt like it had less meaning because for National Merit Scholar the lower standard was like 1570+. Also, most schools I am applying to do not really recognize it compared to NMS. I don’t know, I guess its the typical self doubt.

@CindyLeuWho D18 was NHRP in 2018 and it afforded several opportunities for her to receive full tuition scholarships + at several schools. It was also another distinction to add on her college apps, which is always good. I remember the letter said the top 2.5% test takers identifying as Hispanic were awared the distinction. I think that is an impressive group to be in.

As a parent i can say, it sure was nice going into college app season having safeties with full tuition in hand, while waiting for the reaches and their financial aid offers.

My daughter was NHRP and did not qualify for National Merit. She was offered several full rides to state schools. She was also accepted to Dartmouth, Johns Hopkins and Cornell. Dartmouth recognized the NHRP disctinction and paid for her to visit the campus twice. It is a very nice distinction to have.

I read that PSAT scores where 30% lower than the previous year. Any one else read that?
