Hi,
My counselor told me that I would most likely be named a National Hispanic Scholar. If I do get this, what are the chances that I will get the National Hispanic Scholarship which waives OOS tuition? I emailed the Financial Aid Services but haven't gotten a response.

airbear, i too am a national hispanic scholar. i dont know the specifics and i dont live out of state so i dont know if anything i know will help but i think that if you are recognized as a NHS UT automatically gives you their NHS scholarship

Thanks for your input. I was just concerned since I read that having the recognition of NHS just makes a person eligible for the scholarship, but doesn't necessarily mean an automatic scholarship...

In response to crazytow, does anyone happen to know how much their NHS scholarship is worth? Or does anyone know for A&M or for any other texas state schools?

No, they just changed it literally this year, because of a significant shortage of funds.

This way they aren’t under any guarantee to give kids $$$ just because they did well on a single standardized test.

Prior to this admissions cycle, National Merit, Hispanic, and Achievement was all $3000 a year for in-state, or in-state tuition + $1000 a year for out of state. You could only receive a single scholarship, even if you received multiple National Merit recognition programs. TX residents who were National Merit Semifinalists received a bonus $1000 for freshman year only.

However. due to dwindling funding from the Legislature and a significant hit to UT’s endowment during the financial crisis (and thus to the interest that they earn, which is what they pay to operate the school with and give scholarships with), as well as lower donations (fewer total donations and those they’ve received are lower than normal), they’ve cut the guaranteed money.

Pretty much sucks for the Class of 2013 and beyond, but hopefully things will pick up and they’ll be able to offer a set sum again.

Does anyone know if UT-Austin has made any changes to going back to award scholarships to Merit Based Students? UT-Austin did away with all Merit Based Scholarships in 2010. 2009 was the last year UT-Austin gave out scholarship for National Merit & National Hispanic Scholars.

FYI - My S was a NHS last year and he started getting letters from colleges all over the country with tuition offers. I think if you go under Financial Aid and search you might find more info about which colleges offer money.

All I can say is, my son is a NHS (entering freshman fall 2011) and he got no scholarship money at all from UT. UT doesn’t even give NM scholarships any more. It’s all “need” based, whatever that means.

We’ve been trying to keep up with what’s going on with NHS around the country, as we have another child who will be entering college in 3 years. Auburn had a great program (son had just about a full ride, plus money for study abroad), but that is no longer reflected on their website. Alabama ended its program last year. No doubt the economic downturn has affected most schools’ ability to offer this kind of aid.
