Hey everybody! I have a question. I was nominated and then accepted for publication in the 2004/2005 National Honor Roll Commemorative Edition ( Click here for the website ). I was soooo happy about it thinking that it might enhance my college application. But recently I’ve heard somewhere that this whole National Honor Roll is just a scam for money and I shouldn’t even mention it when applying to college, because it’s not worth anything. And now I’m confused and worried… Was anyone else here published in it before? Does anyone know if it might be of any use when I’m applying to colleges next year?? I would really appreciate any information! Thanks in advance!

no, it is not something to mention on college aps. They only exist to take your money so you can buy the 'commemorative edition'. there are dozens of these thing, and while they might have some criteria for 'acceptance', it will usually be gpa or sat and nothing else, and the college will already know your gpa and sat, so it adds no value.

I don't know if it really helps in admissions, but i don't see how it would hurt either. I also was accepted into the National Honor Roll for this year, but I didn't put it down on my apps. for the main reason that I didn't have the verification that I would be in it way back in October when I was working on them (got the verification around the beginning of December). What makes me slightly more depressed is that I just found out this week that I was nominated to be in Who's Who Among American High School Students for this year as well. Oh well.

I don't see why you couldn't put it down as an award or whatever though if you're still working on them.

hmm... I don't know. Maybe there really is no real value to it. It doesn't really add anything to your overall profile like Bettina said.

i got it too in addition to "whos who among american high school students"...if they ask for money to put u in a commerative book ,its a scam. any valid org. selecting u as a member bc of your academics does not charge.

dont put it on ur app bc the college will just laugh and see tht u haven't really looked into wht this org actually is...just looks like ur scraping for honors

It's a rip-off. They have a junior version of this stuff that we fell for when S was in 5th grade called U.S. Achievement Academy. The most positive aspect of it was that his teacher had nominated him (she obviously didn't know what it was either), so even though that was a nice thing, having to pay to have your name in a book amounts to a vanity publication IMHO. S received mail about Who's Who, National Honor Roll, etc. and never considered putting it on any applications or resumes.

it is a free service to have your bio published into their book. you only have to pay to order a book or have your picture published alonside your bio.

Both National Honor Roll and Who's Who have been discussed many times on these boards. These "organizations" purchase mailing lists and send impressive looking "invitations" to many, many, many students. The criteria for "selection" is dubious, at best. While they will publish your information for free, they will make every attempt to sell you the book. The business is legitimate; the "honor" is not.

The National Honor Roll has a prestigious Washington, DC address, so it has to be legit, right? Wrong. Their Pennsylvania Avenue address is really just a box of Mailbox Etc. They exist in a mailbox.

gh0st:"somehow i got into cornell with only those two awards, besides honor roll"

I'm a Who's Who scholarship semi-finalist

I got a United States Achievement Academy invitation and it referred to the teacher who "nominated" me as Mr.

It seems like all these organizations are borderline scams. Their names seem to be recycled versions of each other.

Why do they have a teacher's who's who? What if a teacher thinks its real? Is National Dean's List also fake, because I've had that listed for a long time?

"Why do they have a teacher's who's who? What if a teacher thinks its real?" If a teacher is too stupid to think it is real, he or she does not deserve to teach others. Its one thing for a gullible student to think its real (still a naive teenager who doesnt know any better), but its a completely different thing for a grown up, able minded adult to fall for that c**p.

I think the way the teacher stuff works is students who are apart of Who's Who nominate teachers. So I guess if enough students nominate a teacher then I don't see why they don't "deserve" it.

national honor roll is free, just put publish my name or somthing and nothing else and its free, they only try to make money by seeling the limited edition book with your name in it
