National Honor Society rejection rant

So I just recieved a rejection letter from my school's nhs the other day, and I was totally surprised. I'm now about to rant about it so you've been warned.

I'm completely confused about why I was rejected. I mean my app wasn't stellar, but I doubt my 100 word statement about honor was that bad... I'm also somewhere along the top 10 in class rank, got a perfect psat, and have ~200 service hrs. I'm reasonaby sure my teacher rec was decent too. I don't have some charlie-sheenesque opinion of myself, but I feel like my stats are more than enough to get into my school's nhs compared to the average nhs member at my school. My classmates were surprised too. My only thoughts on possible issues are that I have yet to actually report my volunteer hours to my school and that I'm on really bad terms with one of the officers.

Anyways, just a rant. But it isn't a huge deal since I was applying to put it as a filler ec, just felt like ranting cuz it was surprising.

Come to my school. If you have anything above a 3.7 GPA, you’re in.

just lie on your apps. NHS is a joke! i am president of my hs, and i doubt it helped me get into college, i could of as easily lied about it without having to go to all those meetings. otherwise appeal it? go ask the teacher?

Hey, I’m not in NHS either.

But you wanna know why? HW.

Lol, they make us do way too much volunteer work to get into NHS.

You should transfer to my school. Ever taken an AP or honors course? Welcome to NHS!

The NHS at your school sounds similar to mine…they make this big deal out of it, and when you get in, trust me, you don’t do crap except one or two charity events for the entire year. I had similar stats to yours - 100+ hours of volunteer work, lots of EC’s, four teacher recommendations, 4.07 GPA, and I did not get accepted because I apparently had a ‘poor essay,’ the English teacher that year generally despised every essay I wrote in class, so I wasn’t really surprised there.

Bottom line is: it’s alright that you didn’t make it. They don’t do anything, and its just one other activity that won’t be on your (i am assuming) large list of EC’s. The valedictorian at my school did not get accepted into my school’s chapter, but they got accepted into Harvard and Yale. Don’t worry about it.

Don’t worry about NHS; it really depends on the school so while your disappointment is understandable, it won’t make or break your college admissions like michplusdich said.

You can join another club! No worries  ours is selective too and a joke. There are more fun ones out there.

hahahaha 3.25 needed at my school :)

NHS is *****. The teachers play their favorites game at my school. I had similar credentials to the OP and I was turned down while several borderline ■■■■■■■■ ***bags got in.

You guys are right though, colleges don’t really care anymore. It’s honestly not that impressive.

I had the exact same thing.

only Student representative on the school board
only student rep on steering committee for school
multiple sports, clubs and leadership positions
100+hours of community service
All AP and Honors classes, 3.97 GPA

I didn’t get in because one of the teachers on the panels said I didn’t have character. I once got mad at this teacher because she was refusing to get crucial medicine for a student out of the hotel luggage check on a school trip. I told her it wasn’t acceptable to be endangering the life of a student, and in return she made sure I didn’t get into NHS.

I know a girl that got in 3.52 GPA, no honors or APs, 5 hours of community service, and no ECs

I also found out on my birthday and my parents got mad at me for not making it. I was SUPER depressed for a while. Thought, “If I can’t get into a not-that-selective school club, how will I make it into college?” but I am now trying to get over it.

Just find other clubs to do. Organize something awesome and shove it in their face. Show them what an opportunity they missed by rejecting you.

Good luck!

I got into NHS, but I don’t think its worth it. I have to pay $60 for the whole NHS and $20 for my own school NHS. It seems a bit too much.

NHS is a joke at my school. I’m on Student Council, Varsity athletics, 50+ hours of community service and 3.99 GPA and I didn’t get accepted. On the application itself it says you have to have 40+ hours to get accepted and I know kids that didn’t even have 30 but they the teacher liked them so they made exceptions.

I can again confirm that NHS isn’t essential to college admissions. As said before, the standards for admittance into NHS are quite varying and often subject to teacher’s discretion rather than more objective criterion. I chose not to apply my junior year, and I can’t say I’ve been negatively affected by it. At my school, the president of NHS is not in the top 10% of our class and is more interested in smoking pot than schoolwork. Furthermore, the meetings conflict with after school sports and you’re not allowed to miss a meeting :/.

I’ve heard from many other hard-working students that NHS just isn’t worth it. I believe the differences in selectivity and objectivity of sections makes it hard for colleges to justify using NHS as another point on a checklist. If anything, clubs like NHS are used as a character check, and with your community service hours it should be just fine.

while there are national nhs standards, each school does have some of its own standards. maybe your school is just strict on certain things.

in all honesty, i’ve yet to see a college genuinely care about NHS membership. it’s too common to really matter. maybe if you’re an NHS officer, it looks good as a leadership role. but then again, you could just be an officer in some other club, and it will look just as nice.
