Does being in the National Honor Society (NHS) play a significant role in college admissions? People at our school (its an international school) are crazy about getting in and only a few people out of 300+ students who apply get in because of the notion that it affects college admissions.

no...it doesn't affect college admissions at all. At some schools you just need a 3.5 GPA to get in. Because it is not standardized at all, colleges really don't care

Agreed, it's just something else to put on your transcript, nothing special.

In my opinion NHS is a waste of time. Don't bother. It doesn't help. Find something that you like and that's worth spending time on and do it instead.

NHS can be impressive for some colleges -- particularly some colleges below first tier. Some such colleges even give automatic scholarships for NHS members (Google and you can find the colleges).

NHS is of no importance when it comes to the very top colleges unless you have a position like being the national NHS president. However, I even know a national NHS prez who was rejected from an Ivy despite having stellar stats and other ECs. (He did get into other Ivies, however.) I know lots of local NHS presidents who have been rejected by all Ivies that they applied to, so don't make the mistake of assuming that NHS will automatically open doors at top colleges.

I was in NHS but didn't put it on my application because it wasn't very important to me. I felt my other ECs were more representative of the kind of person I am. However if I'd been president of NHS or something like that, and had devoted a lot of time towards it, then I probably would have put it down.

It really depends on the school and what you do with NHS. Unfortunately, NHS at a lot of high schools has become the "boost my resume club," and many people realize it.

agree with the person above

Iono it seems like joining is a must at my school, if you are even thinking about going to college. We basically do 30 hours of community service meet once and thats it.
