National Honors Society...

Hey everyone. I was just wondering, who here is in NHS? Who isn't? Do you think it's something important colleges look at?

I am in NHS. Overall, it isn't really hard to get in so it won't really get you any recognition. Maybe if you are in a leadership position (say President or Vice President) then maybe it may mean something.

I'm guessing that the vast majority of CC'ers are in NHS. I agree w/ JohnN....a leadership position would make a difference; otherwise if you're NOT in NHS, they may question why not, but it wouldn't be enough to make or break a college app...

I am. I don't know if its super important, probably just as good as any other club.

I didn't list it on my college app.
I also haven't been to a meeting since my induction :D

I agree. We've all been told how "good" it will look on a college ap, but so many people are in it. It might be even better if you joined a more exclusive club, like debate club, key, or environmental

Please. NHS is a complete joke.

I think it depends on what chapter of NHS your school belongs to. Some of them actually do really good service projects and it is only reserved for truly good students. But most of it is a complete joke. I think colleges see it as "just another club".

At my school everyone joins basically just to put it on their apps. They don't do anything at the meetings, yet they're anal about requiring the members to go to them. I'm not in it basically because I didn't see the point of it. It just seems a little silly to do something pointless just to fill up another line of your application. That's just my school though.

NHS is such a joke. My old school didn't even have meetings-you were forced to be in it with an 85 average

i am president of ours. we have over 100 members and the organization is quite active. with that being said, i didnt even get accepted into the honors program at the college im going to. i am also in the top 1% of my class and got a 33 on the ACT. so i would say college dont look at it closely.

Wow seriously? Asdlkfjslkjdf.
I put it down on my apps because my school actually takes it seriously. They only accept the top students each year (20 seniors, 20 juniors, 10 sophomores) and we actually do a lot of volunteer work.

My school's NHS is, in my opinion, corrupted. I've heard stories of kids not getting in that had good grades and good activities, but they just didn't kiss up to the teacher looking over the applications. Also, my school's NHS puts too much weight on community service.

Overall... I don't think it's very important. I know smart kids in NHS, I know smart kids that aren't in NHS.

it sounds prestigious eh, but i find it a complete waste of time

Our school's NHS used to be considered a joke, with 100 members. Now we are changing admissions standards to downsize, and implementing new service projects. All in my presidency too :)

NHS is a complete joke. At my school you just have to be a decent student to be accepted.

it costs $60 at my school. what a ripoff.

Our NHS is pretty active, you have to get a certain amount of points, by volunteering both inside and outside of school.

I just got in, turned in the app in the last minute :D From the list people who are in it I would say about 70 or so...

Maybe I can get president, but other than that it is useless

Our NHS is wack. I didn't get in as a sophomore and had perfect grades, good citizenship, nice EC's, decent volunteers work, and all that jazz. The teacher who was in charge that year was actually ousted from the organization. Now our leader is a bit...eccentric...but just about anyone can get in. The quality of the members is really a bit funny. These people cheat, do drugs, misbehave, etc. It's not really an honor, but you do get a stole to wear at graduation. Hooray for stoles!
