midmo- who is talking about prestige? The discussion here is about how these awards may be used, how they are determined, whether the student may get this award and a college or corporate award, if the college selection had any bearing on the award. For those of us with children who are not attending a college that participates in the NM program and who do not work for a corporation that gives scholarships under the program, this is a very helpful award. As an earlier poster said, this award could excuse the student from work study for a year. Being the parent of 2 national merit finalists with neither attending a school that participated in the program and not working for a participating corporation, I am thrilled that S2 received this award.
As for colleges not “believing” in merit awards, you are wrong. A quick example, the entire UC system does not participate in NM program yet all give some sort of merit scholarships. Further due to financial aid policies, you may be very surprised to see that colleges that do not offer merit awards may cost less in the long run. No loans and grants just may overtake a $5000 per year award for NM.
So stop your grinning and get over your inferiority complex.

What is your SAT and PSAT score?

^^^Feeling rude today, curious?

I’ve seen these debates over and over. I didn’t accuse you of debating prestige, but I assure you it has been the subject of many debates.

None of the Ivy Leagues participate in NM because they have a stated position against merit awards. They and many of the more elite private LACs are what I was referring to. I know nothing about the UCs and have no interest in them, and I certainly wasn’t referring to them.

I don’t know why you think I have any negative feelings about the one-time awards. For students who go to schools that do not participate, they are great.

I’m not surprised in the least. For people in certain income groups, that is completely true. But it is not true for everyone.

Sonadora09: "I’m in Georgia and got mine on Saturday. "
What is your SAT and PSAT score?

One point that confused me and may have confused some others: some of the $2500 one-time scholarships are “underwritten” by corporate sponsors. These are not the same as the corporate-sponsored scholarships, but are regular NM scholarships that are simply funded corporations (ie., they are among the 2500 one-time scholarships).

Personally, I am very grateful that the first two weeks of my son’s college education will be paid for in this way.

I called National Merit Scholarship Corp. today and found out that April 8 is the scholarship acceptance deadline. You can let them know about your school decision anytime before August.

Need to know about NMS in Georgia-Thanks.

Anyone from Alabama received their $2500 award yet?

yeswecan- you have until April 29 to change school choice for the college sponsored awards (and possibly- if I understand it correctly until May 31 for the $2500 National award) in any case you do NOT have until August!

Greenery- as I recall there is a older list somewhere on CC that had the numbers for each state …I do remember every state but one had them over 200 if that helps
what did you get?
PS The one state was not Georgia & the score was like 195

Since I live in Southern California and I’ve yet to recieve anything, does that mean that I didn’t get the 2500? (When would be the last day to get the award letter?)

Greenery - daughter in Ga received $2500 award - psat - 232

Do you still get a letter if you didn’t get the 2500$ award?

Thanks Momasita Post #49, and pumpkin5 post #51.

Curious77 and any others, call NMSC and ask whether all winners, regardless of the scholarship source, are considered Scholars. Ask whether they award corporate monies first (i.e., pull those eligible finalist out of consideration for other souces). If they tell you yes, then there is a disconnect between what they say they do on their website and what they now actually do in practice. No complaints–in fact I think they should be commended for trying to get the maximum scholarship amount to the maximum number of kids–it must make the process much more labor intensive for that organization. But don’t take my word for it.

*226… no zero, my bad

Mom: Who on this thread said that all those receiving one of the three types of awards are not called National Merit Scholars??? I am amazed.
I did talk to NM to clarify changing the college choice and they said that the national $2500 award recipients are selected first from all of the finalists without regard to college choice or corporate affiliation. Just as it says on the website.

Sry to be annoying but did anyone from NJ receive letters yet?

Will you get a letter if you did not get the 2500 dollar award?

EKB 242, Congratulations! What year did you take the PSAT?
