I would like to use my National merit money to purchase a laptop. I called the national merit people and they said that thats okay(any personal expenses so long as its related to education). I then called stanford, and they refused me. They said that the money can only go towards my loans/workstudy and NOT a laptop because a laptop is not on the financial aid list. I asked the guy if he could put a laptop coputer on my financial aid and he said they "rarely" put it there, which leaves me with some hope.

getting to the point....is there any way i can convince them to get the laptop on my package OR get the merit people to write me the check personally?

Can't you just apply the $ to your work study portion, but still work and then use the extra $ to buy a laptop? If doing this means you can't do work study, you still could work off campus, in a campus non workstudy job or during vacations to make some extra $ for a laptop.

OH you won that achievement one? THat's the one for black people? What dou have to do to win?

Yeah sorry for changing the direction of your thread, but what are the qualifications for becoming a National Achievement Scholar? Same as regular NMF? Easier?

I know you don't have to have as high of a PSAT. I was hoping that if I don't get to be a NMF, I'd surely qualify for Achievement. But you know how on all those black scholarships they are like "do something outstanding!". I don't know if those black kids who won really did something that outstanding.

See if Stanford has a laptop loan program (money for laptop, not a loaner laptop). Harvard does this. Payback doesn't start until graduation, just like a Staford or Pell.

"I don't know if those black kids who won really did something that outstanding."

well I would like to think that I did. Quitejaded and emperor, having a high PSAT only gets you to semifinalist. After that its about your grades, recc and essay and SAT if im not mistaken.

Ok, so same exact process as regualar National Merit except first cutoff is lower? Thanks.
