National Merit Application

on the national merit application, can you put undecided on college major?

999 undecided…

yes.

Yea, my counselor didn’t give me the package. he photocopied just the application and gave that to me.

I have none of the supplementary materials the application tells me to look at…dumb..

Anways, another question: I can put Semifinalist on the Common App now right?

And what about Finalist (theres like a pretty strong chance that I’ll get it, seeing as how 15k out of the 16k semi-f’s do). So can i put finalist on the common app?

Or just put semifinalist and the colleges basically assume themselvs that you will most likely get finalist?

or finalist (pending)?

^ I would also like to know whether or not we could put Finalist on the Common App. I was actually planning to put (pending) as well.

Well, technically, you’re not a finalist; so you can’t really put it on your application.

But I’m pretty sure colleges will assume that you will be a finalist.

I suggest you put National Merit Semifinalist for now and all colleges know what your status is. It will not help by trying to put something fancy like National Merit Finalist (pending).

I agree with Christian. The colleges know that almost all semi-finalists become finalists so you don’t need to point it out to them.

alright will do.

Im guessing that colleges will be able to see those people that will advance anyways (based on the rest of the info provided in the application). Basically only those who don’t meet the required GPA or were just lucky don’t advance anyway right?

Many of the very selective colleges will not pay too much attention to whether you are a NMF or not. Your other factors, like GPA, SAT/ACT scores, EC, recommendations, etc., taken as a whole are more important. On the other hand, many colleges, including some very good ones, recruit NMF heavily and they will send a lot of information to the NMSF including the offers of big merit scholarships. For those school, NMSF is what they care about at this point. Congrutulations to all who make NMSF. It is truly an honor. Work hard on your other stuff and you will do well in your college applications.
