National Merit Commended Cut-off 2008: 16 April 2007

Yikes! According to the CB, tomorrow schools are notified of the students who qualify for at least NM Commended. I'm not sure what that means- I can't think how every school would be notified on the same day.

Can anyone who finds out the commended cut-off post it here tomorrow?

Maybe they mail the letters on this day?

Carpe Aeternum, where did you read that? I can't find any info. from the collegeboard site.

Ohio, perhaps. :) I hope not though! What I wonder is if the NMSC will tell me the cut-off if (when?) I call tomorrow.

can freshman become commended?

no, freshman and sophmores don't get anything. My friend got a 240 sophomore year, and it said she didn't qualify for anything.

Commended scores will be about 202-205, like always.

can international students be commended?

Looks like we won't find out for another few days. Still, post when you find out the cut-off (when you're positive you're correct). The information was mailed today but the NMSC won't comment until at least the end of the week (I spoke to them today) and principals don't have the mail yet.

DR, this is actually a unique year. The cut-offs, as far as I know, have almost included at least one number in the 96th percentile. This year that would mean 200 or lower, I believe. 205 would be 98th only.

Will they just be notifying about commended? Or commended and semi-finalist? Are semi-finalists decided at the same time as commended? I don't really know how it works.

No, you just know that you have been a high-scorer. You don't know whether you're commended or a semi-finalist until fall 2007.

Ah, thanks. Do you think a 221 will be enough for semi-finalist?

It depends on your state, but I think that might be Semi- in every state. If not, it is in most.

Thanks! :)

221 will be good, may be on the line if you're DC, MA, VA, NJ., etc Otherwise, congrats

Does anyone know what selection indices are included in the 96 and 97 percentiles?

If you are in the 99th percentile for your state, does that mean you will probably be a semi? (215 in Ohio)

What are my chances as a 206 in MA? Commendee, maybe? Just curious...

I'm guessing you're commended, since that's a national cut-off. But MA has pretty high semi-finalist cut-off... like 220+ atleast.

99th percentile doesn't mean you'll get semifinalist. I got 99th percentile, but I probably will not make the cut off in my state... but we'll see. I have no idea about Ohio though. 215 sounds borderline(?).

What exactly does it mean to be "commended?"

Commended is just one of the many awards that you can get from national merit. 50,000 nationwide receive atleast this letter of commendation. Those who only qualify for the national cut-off do not advance further in the competition to semifinalist or finalist, who have cut-offs by state.

It looks better if you're a semifinalist/finalist because the prestigious universities always get TONS of applicants who are commended...
