National Merit Commended Cut-off 2008: 16 April 2007

wemel-

confirmed, my daughter got 97% 205. So you are positive she's commended?

She is definately Commended. And if you live in Arkansas, maybe Semi! :)

wemel-

thanks. commended at least she made it. California, I don't think she will qualify for Semi. Too competitive, so many scored 99%.

i am the brother of two NATIONAL MERIT SCOLARSHIP WINNERS... and guess what im probably never gonna get that...what a shame...i wish i was as smart as my older two brothers...its really sad...have any of u guys been in a similar situation?

Don't read too much into this test. It's just a test. Your brothers seem to do well on this test.

Would 224 be enough for semi-finalist status in California?

And does it matter which colleges I send the letters to? (Would private schools care more/less in comparison to public ones like the UCs? Do colleges even really care?)

Thanks :)

^ California was 219 last year, so I think you have it made. Some colleges care enough to give Finalists a full ride. I would do some research before I named any colleges.

Thanks, wemel.
I will take a look around for places to send stuff to. Can't hurt, can it?

Does anyone know if the 2006 state summary reports can help us guess how much our states' cut-offs will decline? I noticed that the avg selection index for test-takers in my state fell by a full 4 points. Can I expect a similar decline in the NM state cut-off?
Thanks!

if you get the letter, are you automatically commended?

We still have not heard anything from d's school even though her score met cut-off according to others here. GRRRR

I'm a bit confused about the whole commended cut-off (sorry!). Is it national or state-wide? I got a 201, but would that be enough in MA for commended?

My understanding is that the letter going out now is to the high scorers which is a national number. People here on CC said the magic number this year is 200 or higher. Out of those 50,000 high scorers , some will be designated semi-finalists and the rest commended - based on each states different cut-offs. So that would mean that if you get the letter now - you are at least commended, possibly a semi-finalist then possibly a finalist. Whew@! I hope that is correct!

Does anyone know what the cutoff might be for NC? Thanks!

Just another confirmation that the national COMMENDED cutoff for this year is 200...as stated in the letter sent to each principal with students scoring above 200.

SEMIFINALIST cutoff varies by state. I'll post this list of historical cutoffs again, compiled by rlvj at
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/...=74297&page=45

The table below shows minimums for the 2007 National Merit Program (2005 PSAT) in blue, based on posts to this thread between 8/24/06 and 9/21/06. It includes historical minimums from a variety of sources, which are mostly listed in post #354. State/regions for which 2007 data are not shown did not receive adequate posts to comment on their minimum.

Hope you can get resolution. Apparently it's up to the schools how they notify the student. DS and a neighbor's DD go to different schools and both got letters at the end of last week. N's DD got an 'envelop in an envelop' at her school. DS's school ran the inner envelop through their postage meter and mailed it to him.

I had to contact the principal at our school to find out that our son did indeed make the cutoff for commended. He brought home the letter the next day.

I asked, "did gs explain it to you?"

"No, she just handed me the envelope."

(me, on the inside, "grrrr.")

But, he is a bit of a slacker in the academic department. He's very dedicated to his ec's and his part-time job.

Not sure what schools to list for the College Plans Reporting Service that NMSC offers.

Copter-

We are in the same position. D got commended, she's too careless, she should have gotten 98% at least because she had 2 problems solved correctly but somehow bubbled the wrong answer.

I said the "same" because she focuses too much on her volleyball. I do not know what schools she will put on her list. She wants to become a nurse but eventually a NP. She's looking at Boston College and Villanova.

Probably not going to get NMF with a 210 in CA (98%).

But hey, 96% of the class of 2008 didn't get at least commodation, and it's a convenient way to introduce myself to 2 colleges. Now how to choose...

urkulmom- if your daughter is a good volleyball player, that might help her with admissions a lot more than her PSAT score or commended status! Contact the college coaches at schools she is interested in... she may need to increase the time she spends on volleyball!
