Ok, our principal told ten of us at our school yesterday that we are National Merit Scholars, and some of the kids have a chance for NMSF. Anyway, I know I only have enough to be commended, so I was wondering how I should use the 2 free notification mailings that I get with those. I realize top schools on my list Like UVA probably don't care, but what about the lesser schools; do they care about demonstrated interest, and could I even get a couple thousand dollars for it? Here's the schools on my list, if it helps. Also, I figure I shouldn't send it to a safety since I sent March SAT scores to them which were better than PSAT, and I should get in anyway.

Tulane
Emory
Georgetown
UVA
Vanderbilt
Wake Forest
Davidson
American
Fordham
Furman
U Miami (FL)
Villanova

PS: I was thinking sending it to Tulane b/c they give a lot of merit aid, and seem to be concerned w/ interest, and I won't be able to visit there-good idea?

thanks guys... I know there are other posts like this but this can help w/ individual schools and stuff!

also, is it a good indicator if the school cares about NM commended if I were to look at the Common Data Set and look at how much they value demonstrated interest?

Georgetown prof told daughter NMS standing would get her a pat on the back there.

If they are the only two notifications you will send, I would send them to the top 2 schools you are interested in and are borderline to get in. For example, if you are a commended student you are probably in U of M and Fordham. dont waste it here. if there is a school that you know its a very very long shot dont waste it here. if you think you are marginal for Georgetown and its where you want to go, send one.

In any case, you will be able to list this acoomplishments in your college apllication so they will find out about it anyway. good luck

thanks guys, I’m probably going to send it to G’town and Emory. Emory says they value demonstrated interest a lot, and this is a good way to do it since I won’t be able to visit it and it is a reach school even though I’m in the middle of their SAT range and stuff.
