National Merit Commended Question

Why don’t you actually tell me something useful? No one actually answered my question properly. @irlandaise‌

And how exactly is someone supposed to predict whether or not you’ll get into specific colleges based on one test you took senior year? Will you get into a good college? Probably. Do commended students go to good colleges? Yes. What more do you want? You have nearly a year before you start applying to colleges.

Yeah it was a pretty dumb question. You knew your scores were good and wanted to complain about missing the mark for national merit by 7 points. I mean I totally understand worrying about your chances at schools and being a NMF probably helps, but if all the info you are giving is test scores it’s really easy to find information about any schools average test scores online. Just matching your score would but you in good shape for UT Engineering and on the lower end for Rice. If you hit 2300 or even raise it by 100 you’ll be competitor anywhere test score wise. 200 points is a big jump but possible so good luck! Anyway you’ll probably be fine with scores but a lot of other aspects matter equally or more. You know all that but it’s hard to chance without that info and if junior year isn’t over for you.

@irlandaise‌ Alright thanks!

@Jmbakh Thanks for the advice!!!

As stated above, Commended will not keep you out of top colleges (to give you an anecdote, I scored 209, and was just accepted to Pton). It won’t get you the scholarship help that finalist would, but you’re fine for admissions.

Sure! And I feel like I might have came off as kind of an ass earlier but like everyone has said you’re in good shape test score wise. NMF is really nice to have though because it gives you a number of full ride options. For highly selective schools though it’s not a big deal.

Unless u are a URM, I doubt colleges really care about Commended status; the number of Commended students isn’t EVER mentioned on their websites or bragging stats. Just focus on getting the highest SAT or ACT score u can-- SAT & ACT scores the colleges do care about!

thank you all! I feel so much better! @ivyhopes @jmbakh @GMTplus7‌

@Tiberium pretty much hit the nail on the head: The awards (especially AP awards) don’t really mean anything. The upper echelon (i.e. like 230+) PSAT scorers get scholarship consideration but that’s about it. Commended, Semifinalist, Finalist etc. is just a meaningless title you can use as an award on applications. Your GPA, SAT/ACT, extracurriculars and essays are about 150 times more important than national merit. Like has been stated before, there isn’t a specific group of schools you should apply/not apply to based solely on PSAT scores.
