national merit commended

My son (a graduating senior) got a 210 when he took his psat his junior year. I know that's above the cutoff for commended scholar, but we never got anything saying so. Should he have received a letter or certificate or something? I called his guidance counselor at school, but she didn't seem to know anything about it.

(there actually is a reason I'm asking, not just parental pride)

I don't know what's up with your son. I got a 203 and many of my friends got above that and we all received letts commending us and giving us instructions in the mail on how to send the commendation to colleges.

Perhaps there is a mistake and you should maybe call the collegeboard.

If he was commended the NMS website says that: "In late September, more than two-thirds or about 34,000 of the approximately 50,000 high scorers on the PSAT/NMSQT® receive Letters of Commendation in recognition of their outstanding academic promise. "

If he is a finalist: "In February, some 15,000 Semifinalists are notified by mail at their home addresses that they have advanced to Finalist standing. High school principals are notified and provided with a certificate to present to each Finalist."

he shoulda received something last spring. If I recall, my Son's letter went to his HS -- head GC received them in mid-April Jr year.

If anyone has gotten the letter as I have, can you PM me the website it says to go to, I think I lost it.

I'm a junior and got the letter last month from the October '05 PSAT. I think his should have arrived nearly a year ago if he took the test junior year.

(The commended letter that give options of sending commended info to colleges)

Commended is when you enter but kicked out in the 1st round. Currently it's just accepted.

Anyways, I got mine from my counselor.

hey guys ..... i got a 204 on the PSAT in OCT 05' (I am a junior) ... Since I heard the cutoff was 203, I am wondering why I did not receive anything saying that I got commended and that I could send notifcation to 2 schools. What should I do? Any advice would be appreciated =)

Not sure what the cutoff is this year, but check with your counselor -- the GC at our HS planned to distrbute the letters after AP testing was done, until I raised a stink with the principal forcing his hand to give them out earlier.

Or, you call the Nat'l Merit Corp in Illinois - I found them extremely helpful last year. Good luck.

I think he definately should have gotten something by now.

I'm a junior who took the PSAT in October and scored a 215 (64 V, 71 M, 80 W). I received a letter 2-3 weeks ago that said that I could notify 2 schools of my choice.

I'm in NY. Would you think this score would be semifinalist worthy here?

does anyone know what the cutoff score for semifinalist was last year in CA?

sorry, NY was 218. Cali

What's the commended cutoff for Cali? I got a 216 and I heard no news.

Commended is a national number (state residency doesn't matter). Last year Commended was 202....it coulda moved up a point. Call your GC or the Merit Corp in Illinois.

bahh! sat's suck especially english! i think the ap-eng lang& comp test is easier than the sat's. i dunno why. they ask different questions' i guess

I had a 203 in Indiana and I also got the letter about sending scores to two schools.

Our GC had no knowledge about the letters for sending info to two colleges. I had e-mailed her what I learned here-- thank you fellow CC'ers! --and she said she'd be "on the lookout" for anything from NM.
I then called National Merit, and found out they had been sent to schools on April 10, addressed to the principals. It is a packet containing individual letters in envelopes addressed to qualifying students (commended and above). The school can either mail the letters, or distribute them at school.
After passing this information along to the high school, the packet was miraculously found in the principal's office, and my son brought his letter home the same day. They said if I hadn't been calling them and pushing the issue, they probably wouldn't have met the deadline (May 17). Keep up the good work here!

for details, see post #202 in this thread:

It also includes a link to last year's state cutoffs for Semifinalist (the ones shown below are for the year before that, and 28 states came up last year, 11 by more than one point).

Good luck...
