National Merit Commended

DO you think I can make it? I'm in the 95% percentile, with a grade of 196. Is it possible to me?

It is highly doubtful.

Really? But if your in the 95% aren't you supposed it get it automatically? (BTW I LIVE IN NY, IF THAT HELPS)

Actually, being in NY might hurt your chances... last year you needed about 206/207 and 97% to be commended.

There is a thread that you can search for that will show you the cutoffs for NMF scores by state.. Commended would be just below the cutoff numbers

I thought the commended cutoff was the same nationwide. Is hovermom correct?

We also live in a competitive state. My DS would have been a semifinalist in some states, but he was commended instead. Too bad we don't live in Mississippi or West Virginia!

"Commended" is determined on a nationwide basis and designates the (approximately) 50,000 highest scoring Junior test takers (or about 96.5 percentile). For last year's test the minimum qualifying score was 200. This also happened to be the NMSF qualifying score for two states.

From the National Merit Scholarship Website:

Commended Students
In late September, more than two-thirds or about 34,000 of the approximately 50,000 high scorers on the PSAT/NMSQT receive Letters of Commendation in recognition of their outstanding academic promise. *Commended Students are named on the basis of a nationally applied Selection Index score that may vary from year to year and is below the level required for participants to be named Semifinalists in their respective states. * Although Commended Students do not continue in the competition for Merit Scholarship awards, some of these students do become candidates for Special Scholarships sponsored by corporations and businesses.

National Merit Scholarship Corporation - National Merit Scholarship Program

The remaining 16,000 test takers qualify as semi-finalists based on qualifying scores determined on a state-by-state basis.

so are you commended if you score at exactly 200? thanks

According to last year's cut-off, then you would be commended.

odd. why didn't i get a letter informing me that i got it....thanks guys

Usually it's about 200+, but I'm not sure. I think for Ga it is definitely.

The commended cutoff is a national cutoff. Semifinalist is by state.

I have a question that really does not concern me, but i am intersted nevertheless
Can the commened score be higher than a states min for nmsf? Like i know arkansas had a cutoff of 201 last year and cut off for commened was 200, so lets say commened is like 202 this year, but arkansas stays at the same place (201). that would be weird huh?

are you sure that was the arkansas cutoff though? i thought the lowest was mississippi with a 204?

No, the commended cutoff has never been higher than a semifinalist cutoff. It's been the same, though, in a case or two.

Does anyone know of a place to find a history of semi-finalist scores? I just got my 2007 PSAT scores and I don't want to have to wait until September 2008 to find out if I am likely to make semi-finalist? I have a 224 and I am an international student.

check up on the cc boards, there the histories there.

last year's commended was 200. its usually about the 4.5% percentile.

Any website where we can verify that the national cut-off for commended is 200?

College Board/National Merit do not approve of the posting of cutoff score lists, so we have to "collect" the information here. We were able to determine the commended cutoff in May when the NM letters were sent to all commended and above students. Later this month we'll start collecting semifinalist cutoffs.
