I know that we find out what the cutoff scores will be for semifinalists in september. is 217 in the state of arizona good enough to qualify? what scores did u guys get and what state do u live in?

I believe 217 is a very good score for Arizona. Even though not for sure, but I think your chance to be a NMS is very good. Both UA and ASU have great scholarship for National Merit Finalists.

217 is definitely enough. I believe Cali has highest cutoff and 217 probably makes the Cali cutoff.

Also, a National Merit Scholar should post so that it's easy for other people to read....just a thought.

I thought the crazy east coast states like Massachusetts and NJ had the highest cutoff.

Check this out:
Following are the qualifying indices for 2005 National Merit Program (Juniors who took PSAT in 2003). The cutoff index for commended students was 200. About 1.33 million students took the test in 2005 and 2005.
You are in almost surely. Congrats. Enjoy reading all the free tuition and more offers you will get.

thanks guys this is pretty reassuring. do the cutoff scores tend to be about the same from year to year, or do you think that it may have gone up from 2004?

They probably went down because the PSAT was harder this year...trust me you are in.

alright thanks a lot

what about a 210 in new york, do i have a shot at anything past commended?

Sorry....but probably no.

What about a 205 in Idaho? Any shot at semi-finalist?

np, didnt expect to get anything past commended, gah my cr and w skillz (m80 cr65 w65)

ahh im really nervous cuase NMS Finalists get a lot of money right? i wish i knew that before taking the test so that way i studied more lol. what two colleges are u guys putting down for the commended thing?

Unless your parents work at a company which offers huge rewards for it, the max you can get is 2500, which is only a few of the finalists.

State schools offer a lot of scholarship money for national merit scholars though.

Many schools offer full ride (tuition, room and board, etc.) to NMF and will treat them very well. These are normally 2nd or 3rd tier schools. But they do provide very good education and especially with some of the Honors College can truly set a kid who works hard to a good future while paying nothing or very little in four years. bballpg04, you shall be in good shape. Just check out all those schools that really go after NMF and you might like some of them.

does anyone have the numbers for the 2006 or 2007 NMS semifinalist cutoffs?

No, because we don't find out until september.

How will a 225 in NY probably end up?

This is the list compiled here for last year's cutoffs

The table below shows minimums for the 2007 National Merit Program (2005 PSAT) in blue, based on posts to this thread between 8/24/06 and 9/21/06. It includes historical minimums from a variety of sources, which are mostly listed in post #354. State/regions for which 2007 data are not shown did not receive adequate posts to comment on their minimum.
