All right, I'm totally new at this. I live in SC and have seen that the PSAT cutoff score for 2005 is 213. I got a 215 in October of '05 (my junior year) and am curious: Does that cutoff score apply for those students who were in the 2005 NM competition, or is that kids who took the test in 2005? I'm confused, because I've been notifiedthat I'm in the top 50,000. But I'm in the 2007 NM competition. So would I have to wait for the 2007 cutoff scores? And to throw another shrimp on the barbie, if the cutoff score goes up a point or two each year, does that mean that I'm walking the fine line between genius and insanity? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

P.S. I don't know what I got on the SAT yet; but I'm counting down the minutes until I can go online and find out!

me 2! Online schore should be out wednesday

If you're within a few points of the 2006 cut-off, you are "on the bubble" and may make it to be a NMSF or NMF, but will have to wait until the fall when they hand out NMSF packets to qualifying seniors, based on the PSAT cut-off scores they calculate over the summer. As long as your SAT score is decent, it shouldn't prevent you from making NMF.

i live in nj but go to school in ny
that means i have the ny cutoff, right

Last year, according to http://www.collegeboard.com/prof/counselors/dates.html , NMSC mailed Semifinalist notifications to school principals on Monday, 8/22/05, and then mailed Commended notifications on Monday, 9/19/05. Assuming a similar schedule this year, Semifinalist notifications should be mailed next Monday, 8/21/06, and Commended notifications on Monday, 9/18/06. Nail-biting time.

N.B. The cutoffs for the two prior years shown at http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/...d.php?t=177542 are missing a 2004 cutoff for AR, though indications are that AR's NMS cutoff is usually the same as the Commended cutoff.

N.B.' In prior years, people have posted all sorts of malarky on the subject of cutoffs. If someone can post a valid list of all the state cutoffs, that'd be great.

Finally, the answer to mathwiz90's question was buried in the Counselor's Guide last year. Assuming it's the same as it was last year, the relevant cutoff is the one for the state of the school you go to, not the state you live in.

Good luck to everyone...

I've gotten so much useful info. from CC that I figure it is finally time to register and reciprocate.

August 21st is this year's date that the merit semifinalist list will be mailed to school principals (see the hotlink below for page 30 of 34 in the pdf file from the collegeboard). Good luck to all (my son is right on the bubble for our state).

Aren't all students who were given letters last spring going to be at least commended? If so, then wouldn't any students not receiving a semifinalist letter be commended? Why the delay in mailing out commended notifications?

Thanks Willy, you did good (okay, well).

I am having a little trouble with rivj's link to the old scores, and willy, does your link show this year's cutoffs? I didnt see that. thanks for your help in advance

So are you saying that if your score was 213 for example and the cutoff is 216, you might still make it because of the "bubble" factor. I thought the cutoff was exact. Please let me know. Thanks

mermaid-
I am assuming willy means the "bubble" between NMSF and NM commended. I believe if the score is over something like 205 (and I apologize- this is from memory) you are NM commended. If you are at or above your state's cutoff for the top 5%, you are a NMSF. And, I was finally able to gt into the old thread # 177542 (th elink above isnt working, though)- it lists the 2005 cutoff scores. Any word yet onthe '06 scores? My s is a jr, so this is the year that matters for us (the upcoming test in Oct). I am just wondering waht # we might be shooting for for next year..as it either stays the same or goes up (I've never seen it go down..)

I took my PSAT in 2005 and got a score of 228. I am in Massachusetts. Do I have any chance of making it to semifinalist status? I already have my SAT-I scores: composite 2360 (actual 2300 and 2280 on two attempts). Will that be counted if PSAT doesn't make the cutoff?
I am really hoping that I can get some scholarships. Thanks.

You'll be NMSF. Your sat scores are fine.

how are finalists determined?

If you make the cut to NMSF (and Collegebound, a 228 is a shoe-in), you'll have some additional application paperwork to do. If I recall, I think you have another short essay to write , sort of to fill them in as to how you've spent your time since you took the exam, so you can demonstrate that you are a good, philanthropic person, and not an axe-murderer.

what are my chances as a 223 from nj?

nactor, in addition to what jym said, you'll need to have SAT scores sent which support your PSAT score and you will also need a school recommendation.

Last year, according to http://www.collegeboard.com/prof/counselors/dates.html , NMSC mailed Semifinalist notifications to school principals on Monday, 8/22/05, and then mailed Commended notifications on Monday, 9/19/05.
(Just reposted that from earlier in the thread for everyone's information.)

NJs cutoff was 221 the last 2 yrs. It is possible it cound jump up a few points, but I think with 223 you stand a very good chance.
And firefly is right- you need to demonstrate that you've continues to keep up the good work- with strong SATs and positive reccomendations. Most NMSFs make it to NMF.
