dad4son -- Our high school hasn't said anything about not disclosing scores, names, or other information.

anybody think nc cut-off will go up more than 4 points? it was 216 last year, and i've seen taht some other states have seen those kinds of increases

MarylandHoward, you got in. I got the same score as you and I got my forms today. So Maryland either stayed at 222 or went up 1 to 223.

Here's what we've got through tonight; pls post if you have additional data.

I can tell you that there are two other Nat'l Merit scholars at my school this year and they both made 216 but neither's a semifinalist (we're in TN).

Your chart shows that 209 is -2 but all information I saw on this forum seemed to show that last year MI was 210, so wouldn't that be a -1?

Cha-ching!! Thanks madmax91. If you got in with a 223, then I'm golden. Congrats to you. Think I'll go out and dance in the rain now!

are u sure about the Michigan cutoff?

As with everything else here, it's only as sure as the post, and this one may be more suspect than others, because declines seem less common this year. But if you want to check it or try to Private Message the poster to get a sense of if they seem to be a jokester or not, here it is:

Could anyone tell me if the semifinalists who are on the cutoff line have the least chance of making finalists? Please let me know..

My high school counselor said the Michigan cutoff is 209 when she told me I'm a semifinalist.

Does anyone have any more info about the NV cutoff?

Thanks RD31 I hope she is right. School has not started yet in our district, so I guess they are waiting until then to tell the kids. My daughter will just make it with her 210. I am very excited for her, but I am not going to mention it. Hopefully I'll get a very happy call on Tuesday.

From all I have read on this, it does not matter what your score is to make it to finalist. Once you pass the hurdle of the cutoff to make semifinalist, the rest depends on other factors. The numbers seem to say that the vast majority of semifinalists become finalists, so if your grades are good and your SAT score is in the same ballpark as your PSAT it should be fairly easy to move on to finalist.

I called NM yesterday to ask if there was a minimum SAT score, because my D has already taken it and scored decently enough to show the PSAT was no fluke, but not in the super-high range. The woman I spoke with was not very helpful and gave vague answers - however - she did finally tell me that last year they were looking for 1300 CR+M, plus at least 51/80 on the W raw subscore. So they don't count the essay. She would NOT tell me the score they were going to look for this year, except to say that it might be higher than 1300 CR+M.

Does anyone know what SC's minimum score for Semifinalist was last year? Data posted elsewhere on CC say it was 212, but someone Private Messaged in that it was 215. Thanks.

A little news on MI and TN tonight, but not much. We've now got reasonably useful information on 18 states. Here's what we've got (please post if you have additional data):

rlvj, shouldn't Maryland stay at 223 until we hear from someone that got in with a 222? Or did I miss it?

I believe the cutoff for CA is 220 and not 219. I was talking to the woman who runs my school's career center, and she said that we had several people who got 219 and didn't become semifinalists.

MarylandHoward: Based on what's been posted so far, MD is <=223, but since no state's SF minimum has ever been higher than 222, it seemed to make sense to show it at 222. However, SF minimums have been going up overall the past few years because of more focus by secondary schools on the PSAT, more people taking prep courses, more people taking the PSAT as sophomores, and the demographic pressures from the Baby Boomlet, so I'll change it to <=223 with tonight's update.
