National Merit Cutoff

sorry for not being more clear in the first place.

i got SF in CT with a 221.

best wishes!

I guess I'm being paranoid, but can anyone confirm the 218 cutoff in Illinois, I just have to be sure before I dismiss all hope.

shelbyfan......I can't confirm, but I've given up with my 215. One stupid algebra mistake=thousands down the toilet.

ahhhhhh! I am going crazy with the MI state cutoff...I asked someone in my school if he got his letter because he got a 224 and I knew that that would qualify for sf in MI. Well he claims the form was mailed to him...I don't believe that for a second, the principal is supposed to give it to you and then he told me he used a pin number online and filled out a form...he said he got it a few weeks ago...it just sounds like Bull **** to me so I guess it's just time for more waiting...

24+ hours to go. First person to find a link to the Wednesday AM press release from NMSC pls post it...

what happened to the rest of the states? need a link to primary source, please.

Obviously there isn't one because NMSC hasn't released the final cutoff list yet.

NMSC doesn't ever release the minimums list. See post #354 for details on what will be released tomorrow and a link to NMSC FAQs on the subject.

The CC source in prior years of the minimums list was a private school in Singapore which was asked a year ago to stop posting it. Details at the bottom of this page: http://hseagle.sas.edu.sg/hscounseling/Tests/NationalMeritSelectionIndices.htm

217 does it in Colorado! D got her info today.

Thank you rlvj for your continuing assistance on this board!

shelbyfan, 218 is definitely semi-finalist.

I live in Washington and I made it with 219, I don't know if the cutoff is lower than that though.

Thank you RLVJ for your awesome research efforts! I just read the article in the newsletter from Singapore that you referenced, and it says that the scores are published in the Guide to National Merit Scholarships, which is available in any school guidance office. Is this guide available online? I have searched the National Merit web site to no avail.

also from washington - got a 218 and didn't get notified though other students at my school were.

uh oh. :( up by three though? that really sucks. gah... I guess I find out for sure tomorrow.

busygamom (post #573): The Singapore school website does say that the Guide to the National Merit Scholarship Program has included the table of state/region minimums in the past. The Guide is an NMSC document published privately to high school guidance counselors, not publically available. Apparently the NMSC has clamped down on the publication of the minimums, thus their 10/3/05 request to the school to stop posting them on its web site. That may also be why we haven't had anyone post the table on CC this year -- perhaps they also pulled it from the Guide, or included sterner warnings in the Guide about keeping them confidential, or delayed publishing the Guide. Given the NMSC's recent focus on this it's actually a little surprising that CC has been permitted to keep the historical tables of old minimums in their archives.

The wait is over -- the NMSC press release comes out later today. And some school systems have already jumped the gun -- if you go to news.google.com and google "national merit" you'll see that some schools in AZ, NJ, and IN have already issued press releases announcing their SFs. Congratulations to everyone who made SF, but in addition, congratulations to everyone who made Commended. That is a real and significant accomplishment as well.

Thanks to all for the smooth proceedings here. It would be much better if the NMSC would just provide a password-protected website with word on if students have made Commended or SF or not, but in the absence of that, it's been a pleasure to work with all of you to accomplish what we did here. Personally, it was very disappointing to see our very-high-minimum state go up even higher, causing my D to miss making SF, but I kind of worked it off by doing the nightly updates here. She's also disappointed, but working through it in her own way as well.

So, here's the final nightly table of 2005 PSAT scores required to make 2007 National Merit Semifinalist status, based on 300+ posts to this thread starting with familymcclure's post #227 on 8/24 through to rabbit23's post #574 tonight. And those two posts nicely frame the gamut of emotions we've all gone through: familymcclure's daughter made SF with a 217 when the TX minimum stayed at 217 from last year, while rabbit23 just missed SF with a 218 when the WA minimum moved up to 219 from 216 last year.

Best to all, and good luck in the college search.

Regards,

Are you referring to this generic press release?
