National Merit Cutoff

I experienced a 35 point increase, 180 to 215, but I studied hard and took a prep course. KAPLAN! Although, my SAT scores are so much different than my PSAT, 2250 out of 2400.

hi. im from texas, and i got a 202 (96th percentile) on my PSAT (took it in 2005), and im wondering if anyone knows the cut-off for commended. ive seen a lot of sites and posts here as well that the cutoff is usually 202, but most people have been handed back the letters two weeks ago from national merit at my school, and i didnt receive one. so just wanted to know if anyone knows the cutoff as someone said it is set at national level. thanks in advance.

i jumped from 182 to a 202, from sophomore year to junior, if that is of any significance in this request.

If memory serves me correctly (and I confess I am not 100% sure), I thought the cutoff was 205. I'll do some checking into this.

ooh. then im nowhere near this score. oh why did i have to make those silly mistakes...i would have gotten a 208 if only i bubbled in correctly.

i was wondering because my cousin last year got the same score (202) and was in the same percentile (96th) so i thought the cutoff would be same. i guess not... :(

oooh wonky-faint. Look at this thread <a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=184446%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=184446</a>
I was wrong, but ist says the cutoff this year was 203. OOOOOOhhhhh, soooo close..... bummer. But, congrats on your great score!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! :( :( just one question if i bubbled it in right!! GAH! :( :(

The cut off for Texas was 217, because my friend was saying she barely made it, and she made a 217!

So, I took the October 2005 PSAT in Maryland and got a 223 on it. Would you say I have a pretty good chance to become a semifinalist because I've been looking around and it seems that the cutoff for past several years has been 222, I just hope it doesn't go up by more than 1!

Hasn't that whole thing already been done? The cut off is different for each state.

no i didnt mean cut-off for semi-finalist, just for commended. and how did ur friend already know the cut-off, isnt it not even announced till september?

She already knows she's a semi-finalist...the school told her, so it's already been announced.

let me check something out

Semifinalists

In early September, about 16,000 students, or approximately one-third of the 50,000 high scorers, are notified that they have qualified as Semifinalists. To ensure that academically able young people from all parts of the United States are included in this talent pool, Semifinalists are designated on a state representational basis. They are the highest scoring entrants in each state. NMSC provides scholarship application materials to Semifinalists through their high schools"....

So one can ASSUME they are a semi-finalist, it is not official

My d just got a letter saying that she was in the 50,000 high scorers. Does that mean she's Commended? (Sorry, I haven't read this entire thread!)

It means she will be either commended or a semi-finalist, as everyone that made the national 203 commended cut-off is notified and asked to designate 2 schools at this time. In September, NMS will decide the state cutoffs for semi-finalists and letters will be sent out notifying kids if they are commended or semi-finalists. Here's a thread with last year's state semi cutoffs. They usually don't move too much from year to year, but if she's close, you'll have to sweat it out until September!

wheres the link to the thread lol

Sorry, senior moment, here it is:

<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=177542%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=177542</a></p>

Does anybody have the 2006 stats? I want to see if the FL score went down any for last years juniors, because all I need is ONE MORE POINT, and then I'm in.

I have talked to the National Merit people on the phone. The lady said that on the transcript they want to see "A's, and B's--no more than a few C's" in order to advance you from semi- to finalist. So, maybe, a 3.2 is okay but a 2.8 might cost you. And your SAT's--she didn't give me exact numbers, but the idea is that you get at least roughly 700's (or very close to that), even if that's a bit below your PSAT's.

You can say that the whole college/NM thing is unfair, but, really, in America we have so many opportunites: need-based, merit, sports, music, drop out of school and later go to community college, etc. I think we should be thankful for what we have and knock on every door to see which one(s) will open--and be persistent.

Can anybody predict the PSAT cutoff for Mississippi for the year 06-07?
I say it will be 205
