I remember reading somewhere that Pitt does not participate or award scholarships for National Merit Finalists. Can you give me any information regarding this? Also, If DD, who is now a Finalist, becomes a NM Scholar, how are awards from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation handled? Does Pitt ever continue a one time NMSC scholarship by matching it in years 2-4? Thanks!
@flashk, We do not automatically award aid to National Merit Finalists. We do offer three $1,000/year awards to incoming freshman who are National Merit Scholars and inform the National Merit Corp. that Pitt is their number one choice. Those awards are not given out until after May 1.
If you receive an award from the National Merit Scholarship Corp. directly, you should notify our Financial Aid office. You can get a little more information from the last section of this webpage: https://oafa.pitt.edu/financialaid/next-steps/receiving-aid/
Hope that helps clarify. You are always welcome to contact our office with further questions: oafa@pitt.edu for admissions (and scholarships) and finaid@pitt.edu for financial aid or 412-624-7488 to reach both offices.
That’s very helpful. Thank you. We will be sure to notify Pitt of any award if she becomes a NM Scholar. At this point she has a full tuition scholarship from Pitt and does not qualify for any financial aid other than a Parent Plus loan. So, fingers crossed again.
